I am trying to find out what it will cost us to rent one of the beach wheelchairs at Castaway Cay. In addition, if we take my Mom down there in her wheelchair and rent one will we have to take her chair all the way back to our room or with us to the beach? I cannot find any information on this on their website so would appreciate any information that is available.

Thanks,

Kat

They are not rented out...they are there on a first come first serve basis...you wold wheel her dow ntothe sand chairs and then transfer her to the sand chair and leave yours there.

Ok, thanks. Hopefully we can get down there early enough then. I do remember seeing them on other visits, so that should be ok.

Thanks,

Kat

I couldn't find anything on their site only a picture of a chair with the large beach wheels. I would like to know how this works out for you if you are going before our October Cruise? Does anyone know how many are available?
Good Luck and Thanks!!

Here's a picture I found in one of the cruise report postings.

I have significant mobility problems and thought the "sand" chairs would be aplus. had no trouble getting one even though we were not one of the first off the ship. be aware, the chairs are extremely hard to push. I got out of the chair on the sand and walked with help to where we were going to sit and then sat back down in the chair. But I spoke to several families whose loved one could not walk and it was very hard and disappointing for them. Also, unless you are first off the ship, which requires waiting in a VERY long line, it is a long walk to find a place to sit. We managed when we were there, but it is not at all handicapped friendly and is not how Disney presents it. Knowing my problems, I spoke at length with Disney prior to booking and some of what they told me just wasn't true. For example, to get to the adult beach, you must get on and off two different trams going and coming. Few places at the eating pavillion to park a wheelchair so you can eat with your family. Just know ahead so you can plan.

We have been to Castaway Cay twice before so I know about getting a place to sit, etc. My Mom cannot walk at all so if we can get a sand chair that will be good for her as I know we will not be able to push her chair in the sand at all. Thank you for your input, though. It is much appreciated.

We have been to Castaway Cay with my wife who is mobility impaired and permanently on crutches/in a wheelchair. When we got off the ship, we spoke with one of the cast members and they brought around a golf cart and took my wife right to the beach in it - very handy.

I agree with the previous poster who stated that the beach wheelchairs can be hard to push. This depends somewhat on the level of tire inflation, so look around if you can before choosing one.

Also, be aware that there is an elevator to the tendering platform on the Magic, if you have to tender - I did a previous post on that one!

PM me if I can help you in any way.

Thanks for the info. We are just doing a three day so there will be no tender but it is nice to know it is there if we need it. I will be sure to look for a chair with fully inflated tires. Mom is confined to a chair as a result of a stroke. We have no trouble with transfers but she has no mobility on her own and her chair will NOT push in sand at all so we will be better off with a sand chair even if the tires are not full I would think. We are pretty excited about taking her as she has never been on a cruise and hasn't been on a vacation in over nine years so it will be an adventure for her.

Thanks,

Kat - We got back from DCL on 12/28. My Mom cannot walk very far and usually takes her wheel chair. On Castaway Cay I asked the security person at the gang way to have a cart brought for my Mom. I took her chair onto the island with me since the weather was crummy and we weren't going to the beach(sand). The cart took us to the area outside of the gift shop. I agree the island is not very wheel chair friendly but DCL has always gone out of their to help me with my MOM.
