wheelchair question at airport

I will be bringing a wheelchair for my upcoming trip. Does the airlines count that as a checked item. Is the procedure, you wheel yourself down to the gate and right before you get on, you get off the wheelchair and they store it until you arrive at the next next airport and then it is waiting for you when you get off the plane?

It doesn't count as luggage and you have the procedure right.
