Hi, we're going on the 7/17 Western. We are traveling with a friend who has muscular dystrophy and is in a large wheelchair. He cannot transfer out of it. He would like to know if the tenders are accessible for a wheelchair so that he can explore Grand Cayman. He doesn't plan on doing any excursions. He would just like to look around.

Sue & Cathie:confused:

We just returned form the 6/19 sailing. The tenders do have some sort of accomodation, although it may only be the large one. There are larger and smaller-sized tenders.

There was a family returning the same time as we were on a smaller tender and I believe they were asked to hold off until the larger tender arrived (they seem to alternate), but the gentleman indicated he could walk to board the small tender.

I have to assume he arrived earlier on the large tender.

I would post this to the disAbilities board. The tenders vary from port to port and even within a port. We were able to get a wheelchair onto a tender at St Thomas, but I have never done the Western. There are a few cruisers on the other board, someone there may have more info. There is also a wheelchair board at cruisecritic.com, and a cruiser there may know.

Thanks, Carla. I did post on the disABILITIES section as well. Steve is excited just being able to go on the cruise but it would be nice if he could explore the island.

Good luck, Sue and Cathie. I know how tough it can be to figure out what can be done from a chair in each port. I would love a follow-up on your experiences. I spent a huge amount of frustrating time trying to figure out how to do the Eastern, but know bupkus about the western Ports.

Cathie and I will definitely post a report after the cruise about the handicap accessibility on the western. I think Steve has surprised himself at how much he has been able to do with his disease. He never thought he would be able to travel to Florida let alone go on a cruise. We'd love to see Disney build a kind of deck at Castaway Cay that would allow people in power wheelchairs to get closer to the beach area. Thanks again for your help.
