I had a knee replacement 8 months ago and it did not go as planned. I have rented a wheelchair for our upcoming trip. I can walk short distances, but can't stand in place for more than a few minutes. Do I need to get a DAS since I am able to transfer to the rides by myself?

If you are not used to using a manual wheelchair in daily life, you may want to consider renting an ECV instead. It is very easy to rack up 8 miles (or more) per day in the parks, and without "training" for it, most folks will give out, and spend the rest of the trip being pushed - not to mention with sore muscles :( If you do try to self-propel, please bring along a pair of bike gloves to help protect your hands - and if someone pushes you, they should have a pair also.

I speak from experience ;)

I hope you have the most Magical trip you can have! :)

^^^THIS!!! DH got the worst blisters on his hands the first year I had to use a chair in the parks. NOT magical at all..

Also a small backpack on your chair containing tire pump (if your tires are inflatable), extra tubes, a spare pair of gloves I use weight training half finger gloves most of the time, a poncho for your chair, and possibly a back up change of clothes. I agree with everyone above, if you are going to use a chair training is essential, and will make for a happier trip! :-) Nothing wrong with starting out small, and touring your local mall a few times, then when you feel ready take those wheels out for a walk. I aim for 5-7 miles per day before Disney World to train my body and muscles to respond to the rigors of self propulsion. Wishing you good luck and a great vacation. P.s. I hope your knee does heal up at some point.
