DD is looking for a medium-sized, low or no shedding puppy. She's looked into several breeds and seems to really like the soft coated Wheaten terrier. Anyone have any experience with these and can recommend it? Is this the kind of dog that will be content to be home alone while they are at work during the day?

My good friend has a Wheaten (I have an Airedale terrier so I can comment on terrier behaviour too). Like most terriers, he is smart but stubborn. Daily walks are a must since they have lots of energy. My friend and her DH work during the day but give lots of attention at night. When he was a puppy, my friend would go and spend her lunch hours at home with him. He doesn't seem to mind the time at home alone (and neither does my terrier).

He is the sweetest, most lovable dog. He was easy to train and loves to be around his people (think lap dog). He is only about 40 pounds and doesn't shed much. My friend has him groomed once a month (since he doesn't shed, he needs haircuts!) and she brushes him every other day to keep his coat looking great. She told me she would highly recommend a wheaten to anyone! Good luck! I have had terriers since I was a little kid and wouldn't have any other kind of dog!

We got our Wheaton back in 1994 (before they were trendy) and had her for 14 years. She was a great family dog - easy to train, good with the kids. Loved that she didn't lose her hair, but didn't realize how much work it was to keep her looking good. As much as I tried, it was next to impossible to give her coat the attention it needed. High maintenance grooming and if I was going to get another dog, I would probably get an Airedale!

I know of a number of people that also had/have Wheaton's, and they find them a little hyper - we never found that to be a problem though....

Terriers are one of the toughest breeds to deal with. Very, very smart and need to work/a job. We grew up with them.
