We (two adults, two teens) will be having lunch at the San Angel Inn on Wednesday. Although I know this place gets "mixed" reviews, I'd like to hear from those that have enjoyed it. I've looked over the menus, and other than the margaritas, I'm at a loss as to what to order! Suggestions, please. :goodvibes

I like SAI. I like its theme and if it is not busy I will ask for a riverside table. I am also one that goes to the mexican grocery stores and orders food from the grill in the back rather than go to the rest. SAI is not very spicy and maybe a little bland as far as mexican meals go. You also can not compare it to the "authnetic mexican" places across the country. (I don't think these places are very good, unless they have two menus, one for Gringos and one for Hispanics) As far as building the meal with ingredients, SAI is very authentic for a mexico city style, but just less flavorful. For lunch, I would order the Sope and a bowl of Sopa. One is an appetizer and one of the most flavorful items on the whole menu. Sopa is a chicken soup with some good stuff in it. It will not weigh you down the rest of the day. Tacos Al Pastor is a sauce of peppers and mojito, which is pineapple and lime juice. It is sweet and earthy at the same time. Tacos Al Carbon are ok, but they need lime, cilantro, and salsa verde to make me happy. the salsa is good, but the chips are just bags of round chips. At SAI, I would skip the familar Burritos and the like, as the three above taste much better and are not as heavy.

I like San Angel Inn very much. Especially for the atmosphere. Some of the menu is the standard mexican style food you can get anywhere in the USA - good, but not necessarily anything unique. I really enjoy their Mole (which I think is only served at dinner) and for an appetizer I love their Sopa Azteca (which is a tortilla soup, with chicken maybe?). I also love the Tacos Al Pastor (pork tacos).

If you want something more unique, look at the specials. My all time favorite meal there is a special that is a poblano chili stuffed with a pork/fruit mixture and served in a walnut sauce and topped with pomegranate seeds. Maybe I'm just timing it right, but on my last few visits (spaced many months apart) this has always been a special. I'm hoping it will be a special in May!

That chili stuffed pork is really good. I thought it was a one time special. I had mine with a salsa verde though. it was really good. Glad to hear it is around.

Thanks for the suggestions....it's great to hear about the different dishes with such detail! What is the cozumel platter? I don't remember seeing that on the menus. Anyway, it's all sounding really good - I'm really looking foward to trying something new and different. :thumbsup2

You are referring to a traditional Mexican dish called Chiles Enogadas. When I lived in Mexico City they only made it in September to celebrate the Mexican Independance. The green chile, the white sauce and the red pomegranate seeds make the colors of the Mexican flag. I could see where maybe for May 5th they might. WDW probably doesn't base the serving of this dish on Independance Day if you have ordered it over a few visits. I think they only do it once a yr in Mexico because it is sooo much work. All the women of the family came to the house and we all worked in the kitchen all morning and afternoon. We even crushed the walnuts in a molcahuete (a stone dish with a stone stick like thing).

I really like the Sausage and Cheese stuffed into the Jalepeno's. I think it is an appetizer.

The "Combinacion Cozumel"--Grilled beef tenderloin, marinated shrimp and roasted chipolte served with ranchero sauce, chipolte pepper mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. price $23.95 from allearsnet.

I ate most of the beef, DH had a little, it was very, very good. DH ate shrimp, which I don't like. We split the mashed potatoes and veggies, and all was well. We also split the chocolate mousse for dessert, and it was awesome! I had the salad for appetizer and DH and our boys shared the nachos.

The best appetizer of our whole trip was at SAI, we had the Ceviche, which is a collection of seafood that is in lime juice, the acid cooks it, and there was also cilantro, probably tomatoes. It was totally awesome, will return just for that alone! The rest of the meal was great, we did the Christmas Processional dinner for that meal. SUPER!
