I eventually stopped booking character buffet dinners because the food quality seems to be bad at every one we've been to. As you mentioned in your OP, this was a particular problem at Chef Mickey's, where everything tasted like it had been sitting under the lamps for waaaaaaay longer than it had any right to be. The only one I can think of that was "okay" was dinner at 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian. We have not tried Garden Grill because our family LOVES eating at the World Showcase (it's seriously one of my favorite parts of every trip!), but I would try it before I went back to any other buffet-style character dining experience.
We have Storybook Dining with Snow White booked for upcoming trip. Partly because my dad "has" to meet Grumpy, partly because even with the mixed reviews, the menu looks great and the food quality seems to be at least a little better than buffets. Also, as others have pointed out-- family style dining (well, family style desserts/apps and choose-your-own entrees) is a lot better for a character meal, and you don't have to rush to grab a plate in fear of a character visiting your table. If I were in your situation, I would try to get a table here or at Garden Grill as others have mentioned.
