What's your experience with a shattered Ipod back to the Apple Store

Does anyone have any experience with getting an ipod repaired at the apple store? I called the website and they said it would be $99 to get it repaired, they'd send me shipping label to send it back. It's only 6 mos old. I thought I had heard of some people taking them back to the apple store and they got a new one for free? Has anyone had that experience? I think we'll try to get to the mall sometime this week to see what happens but wanted to see what others experiences are.

Thanks

DD dropped her ipod in the garage (after being told not to take it out of the house until she had a studier case), and it shattered after only having it a month. It was $99 to fix. They really didn't care it was only a month old, it was our fault so we had to pay for it.

If it shattered due to being dropped then you don't have a leg to stand on. If it shattered because of some manufacturing defect then it should be replaced for free under the warranty.

Totally depend on who is helping you and what mood they are in. DS's iPod stopped working because he wasn't careful taking it out of the dock and bent the pins. I explained exactly what happened and they just handed me a new one. So this was his fault and I told them so. A few months later the home button on mine stopped working. $150 for a new one. I was told "Sorry, electronics don't last forever."

I would go when it's not busy, make an appointment, be honest and polite. You never know.

If you have the extended Applecare warranty then they will cover a dropped iPod/iPhone (i.e. replace it for free - they did this for DS' iPhone under the extended Applecare Warranty). If you don't they they will charge you to repair it. You can either ship it back or take it to the store the response will be the same.

We were given the opportunity to turn it in and get a new one for $99 (same generation- 4th), so that's what we did. I don't remember what the cost to repair was, it must have not been much cheaper.

Just be glad it's $99 or that you had an opportunity to get a protection plan. My ipad cost $250 to repair after my kids dropped it 3 times! When it finally started losing pieces, I had to take it in. I bought an Otterbox the same day, which I should have done in the first place. :sad2: I wanted to ban my kids from touching it, but DH is Mr. Softy. Although, 2 times it was an accident (fell out of the case), and the 3rd time no one would admit who dropped it, or they didn't realize...

The apple store used to do a "one free replacement" but they stopped it a few years ago. Now it's a $99 trade in.

Check your credit card agreement - maybe they'll cover the replacement if you have purchase protection insurance.

Mfg./AppleCare warranties don't cover accidental damage.

We had the same experience as others have reported. Last week my DD dropped her iPod touch that she got for Christmas and the screen shattered. It still worked but the screen is uneven.
The Apple Store told us - $99 to replace it with the same model or 10% off any new product. She couldn't decide what to do so we bought a $30 case the includes a front cover.

I will never in my life spend another penney on an Apple product. Long story for me but the have the WORST warranty policies I have seen out there.

We recently used Digi Express online to replace my son's shattered screen. It was $25 labor plus parts and came to about $75 total. Good service and perfect repair.

Same here. I think it's ridiculous to market a product as light and portable and then have it be so fragile and not stand behind it. If you want to protect it, the Otterbox adds a lot of weight to it, and it's not cheap either.

I'm not a big Apple fan but breaking a screen as result of dropping it isn't a mcg defect covered by a factory warranty. Be careful, buy a protective case or buy a plan which covers accidental damage. Some credit cards cover accidental damage for a limited time after purchase.

I bought an Otterbox for my Ipad Mini for just this reason. I'm a dropsy person, and just wanted the peace of mind. Can't blame the company for my carelessness...

We were given the same opportunity TWICE now. Once dd broke the window part and once she broke some other button.

Same as everyone else... we traded it in for a refurb for $99. She used it with the shattered screen for months before chunks started falling out and we had to get it replaced.

I don't use Apple's warranty, I buy from places that will offer accidental handling damage. Worth every penny!

Its an 8.00 part(as long as it is NOT an iphone5-those are expensive parts still) to replace and not the difficult- if you don't want to pay the 99.00 you really can do it yourself!

Look to see if you have an ifix and repair store locally. May be slightly cheaper.
