What's wrong with borrowing?

We have 200 points. We always seem to be borowing from the next year's use year. But, is this really a problem? I was thinking that this would avoid the risk of points expiring and who cares in 40 years anyway? What am I missing? If I always have enough points to travel by borrowing. Is this whole borrowing thing just a clever way for DVC to make me feel like I need to buy more points when I really don't? How do other habitual borrowerers out there feel? Thanks!

Borrowing is not a problem. But if every year you use more points than your contract allots, then at some point you will be out of points to borrow because you can only borrow one year ahead. When that happens, you will either have to skip a year or rent/transfer points or buy one time use points from Disney.

Borrowing is not a problem. In fact, it is good for the system as a whole. :) Without borrowing, DVC could not allow banking. :scared1:

I agree with Jean - borrowing only becomes a "problem" if you run out of points to borrow and want to take another trip. IMO, there is no need to worry about borrowing until that point is reached. It could be several years away. As Jean also posted, you have several options when you get to that point.

We borrow some years and bank some years. It works out. :)

Actually the 1 yr you cannot go, you won't need to rent your points out too. Aside from the yucky... One borrowed you cannot bank ect, it will work out great. The last yr in our contracts, the borrowers will be the only ones not losing points.

We've gotten to that point. :rolleyes1 This year's trip used ALL our 2014 points from our Dec. Use Year. We transferred some points plus bought One Time Use Points. BUT............ we have a trip booked for December for the entire family of four generations, that hopefully we'll all be around to enjoy! I really don't think we'll be able to have ALL of us together too many more times, as my mother will be 89 in November, so I had NO qualms in doing this. However, we won't be able to go again til 2014/2015. :scared:  Unless of course, I find that elusive money tree and can buy more points between now and then. :lmao:

I wouldn't have changed much about our previous trips. We always have to borrow for the family trips.

With an October use year and always traveling in May/ June, we had to borrow our 2013 points for our 2013 trip. I still have my 200 points for 2014. So far, never had to cancel a trip. So what happens to tge non- borrowers at contract end? Will DVC skip dues that year or something? Will they put a stop to borrowing at some point? Curious what others think!!

I would not say it is a problem, but you do lose some flexibility if you cancel a trip. We borrowed most of our 2014 October UY points for a trip at the end of this year. Should we have to cancel or drop a night, those points must still be used before Oct 2014. If we had booked that trip using our 2013 UY points, then we could bank points if we had to cancel or drop a night, giving us an extra year to use them. This is true of banked points as well - you can't bank them again if your plans change.

No one knows. They may decide to stop borrowing and banking a few years prior to the end of the contracts. They may prorate. They may institute a lottery. They may do nothing and just let the reservation system continue as it currently operates. They may extend the contracts before then. Many possibilities and again, there has been no official word or even informed speculation from an official source, LOL.

IMO, you are doing things right by always borrowing. If you always bank, then you have too many points.

I always try to bank points. Love having the "extra" to play with in the next year. Maybe to be able to book at a more point expensive resort/view or a bigger villa or even an extra or longer trip.

I don't like the idea of borrowing. It makes me feel like I may not have enough when I need them. I know this thinking is a**backwards but can't help it. Just hate starting the year short.

You will still owe dues for the length of the contract even if the points are gone by borrowing.

Agreed but one thing is for certain, there are not enough villas for everyone to use all the points the last 2-3 years. Banking will be more restricted than borrowing in all likelihood.

Maybe, I think it depends on how they decide to limit the points usage the last few years plus the dues should be much less late in the contracts because they won't need reserves or capital improvements.

Have been members for 13 years and I borrow frequently. Have never banked points either. I have to go on two Disney trips a year. One of these years I am going to save my points for a two week trip to Hawaii.

I agree with you on all points. Not borrowing leaves me with more flexibility. That being said, right now I am really borrowed out after a couple of years of not having to borrow at all. I really prefer to not have to borrow. Being borrowed out makes me feel broke, like when my wallet is empty.

With the option of renting points and having them transferred in, I don't think anything is wrong with borrowing. Shoot, I'm already in borrow mode and we just bought in Jan 2012! My thought when purchasing was I'd rather be short points and not have to go, or just pay out of pocket, then be forced to go or stuck with points I don't use. I'd hate to pay dues on points I don't need. We've already booked 2 trips we didn't plan on when purchasing, and we're changing our plans and how we view DVC usage (in a good way) just 18 months after purchasing. With that said, I can always transfer points in if we need them.

Decemeber use year :crazy2: It would really mess with my OCD to have 2012 points through the 2013 calendar! I would need a straight jacket!

I so agree. I almost get panicky that we might borrow--because we might not get a DVC vacation sometime in the future! It's silly I know, but it doesn't stop the butterflies in the stomach.

I do wonder if addonitis strikes borrowers at a higher rate than those that bank the points. But that is not a statistic you can track.

I couldn't deal with that either. I have a Feb UY and like the idea that I officially "get" my points at the beginning of the year.

For me, it's the natural order of things. ;)
