What's up with "UP!"

I blame my grandmother, who I otherwise believe is a saint, for my bird phobia.

When I was a small child, she would take me to a park that was full of pigeons. It was as bad as Venice, and I was so little that they physically engulfed me.

I'm honestly sympathetic to your phobia but OMG this had me cracking up at my desk. I'm sorry![/QUOTE]

I am going to guess it will be pretty similar to Flights of Wonder in terms of the bird activities since they can’t retrain all of those birds too much. I think it is mostly the human characters, backfrop, and plot that frames the bird actions that will change. So swooping seems very likely. And they do get CLOSE; one of the birds that swooped accidentally smacked into my shoulder with his wing—poor little fellow.

I don’t blame you for laughing. I sorta laugh too at the idea of what my grandma was thinking, but it was like standing in a sea of pigeons that came up over my knees.

Worse, she made me feed them bits of stale bread that they literally attacked me over. I was like 3 or 4 years old. What the heck, Grandma?

That’s what I’m afraid of. I have a pretty serious bird phobia, and that would not be fun for me. My family can meet me at the Dawa bar after the show. LOL!
In the previous incarnation of the show, there were plenty of birds flying over (sometimes barely) the audience. I was taking video of one flight, had my cell phone in my hand, just about head high, and the bird came from behind me, so close that I instinctively pulled my head down and to the side. It was a pretty cool experience, and I managed to hold the phone still enough to get great video, but I could just imagine that happening to someone with a bird phobia.

For what it is worth, that CAN happen outside of the bird show. Last summer we got food at Flame Tree BBQ, and were walking up a walkway towards covered seating when a large bird (crane I think) flew kind of in front of me, but on the way through, it slapped me in the head about 3 times with it's wing as it was slowing down to land. Again, pretty cool experience for me, but not so nice for someone who has a fear of birds, so I guess, just be aware, there are wild birds around the parks, sometimes things happen.

@Tomh I imagine one can get plowed into by a bird anywhere, and there are certainly lots of them all over Disney. It keeps me on edge, that’s for sure.

I won’t eat at Flametree even though it sounds wonderful due to all the posts I’ve seen about people being bothered by them in the dining areas there. A bunch of birds came after me at the Yak & Yeti quick service area; I had to get my husband and kids to scare them away.

@Robo Ha Ha Ha!

Add Rose and Crown at Epcot to that list. I've seen the birds fly up and take food right out of the hand of a guest while they were trying to eat it

That is awful! I totally get where your phobia is coming from!

Ok, so back to the original question.... I'm thinking (and hoping) that they just are not posting the schedule of show times for April and early May yet because it is a new show and they need to work out the kinks. It seems fairly certain it will open for the Animal Kingdom celebration weekend. I will be at AK on May 5 and no times are listed so I am going by the May 6 and beyond show times while planning my May 5 day. Hopefully we will start getting reports next week.

I don't blame you but this thread is cracking me up as well ! We have had a number of these experiences at
"SeaWorld" - DONT eat outside there !

Thank goodness Disney didn’t turn these wonderful creatures into a carnival act but promoted them within a more natural environment.

I'm not sure I get/appreciate the distinction. I have seen both the AK bird show and the Miami Parrot Jungle one. Neither show featured wild birds.

(I actually have a little bit of experience handling wild birds and rehabilitating injured birds so they can go back into the wild. Birds are amazing animals!)

WDW specifically claimed their show was more "natural", but er, that was just a bit of self-promotion.

I'm sure I'd enjoy seeing a falcon or owl actually capturing prey, then flying off into their natural habitat. Don't think we're ever going to see it during a AK bird show.

Call me crazy, but I also can't imagine that adding an Up! overlay is going to make the bird show MORE naturalistic.

A few years back, a deer accidentally DID jump into the lions' den of the National Zoo. The poor lion had no idea what to do.

@JerseyJanice So can you watch the scene in Mary Poppins with the old woman feeding the birds???;) We put off seeing the Flights Of Wonder show until last year and we really enjoyed it. I wish we had seen it more often and we're looking forward to the new show. I just checked on the debut this morning and it's listed as 4/22 (just next week.)

I’m pretty confident that a falcon flying away with Thumper to make him into a meal wouldn’t go over well with little kids and their parents in the audience.

LOL, Micca. I don’t recall being upset by that movie scene. I did freak out badly one time over a slaughtered bird painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I think I will go to the Y&Y beverage place and enjoy a Yak Attack while my family sees the show. I just hope none of my baby grand nieces don’t develop a bird phobia like their great aunt. I do think they’d be safer watching parrots dressed in costumes. ;) Even I have to admit that a parrot wearing a bellhop’s cap is darling. :)

I was going to be there on that weekend 5-4 thru 5-8 for the last couple days of "Party for the Planet" and was going to AK and wanted to see the new "UP" show, but for the whole 2 week period there are no show times listed. The shows are listed starting after May 5th.... so I was wondering if they were doing something special with the shows for Party of the Planets since it's starting April 22nd.
The show began its “soft open” today. This was Tweeted out by Orlando Park News:

The former show did this multiple times, so I would say that more than likely this one will as well.

Any squirrels in the show?

I can handle birds flying over me I just have a phobia of being pooped on by them.

At first I was thinking “well no one enjoys being pooped on by birds” and then realized that somewhere out there there has to be some group of weirdos that does in fact enjoy that lol

Thanks for that Hiro! The video is not great quality, was that woman dancing at the beginning supposed to be funny?
I’m not sure. I only checked the first couple of seconds to see if it oriented correctly. @rteetz also found this video of the show - posted by Blog Mickey:

I haven’t watched the 2nd video. I told rteetz it’s because I watched the original Flights of Wonder at San Diego Zoo before AK even existed. ;)
