What's up with the Cabin area?

So, since the meadows pool is now officially closed for refurb, we finally found the other pool. After coming here for years, I never knew where it was. LOL Anyway, we hopped on our bikes and headed out. I have to say that the area by the cabins looks, well, sort of trashy. Wondering if they had a lot of hurricane damage or something because all along the 2200 - 2800 road is just dead tree stumps and the cabins. A large number of the cabins have the lattice work coming off at the bottoms and overall I was shocked at how crappy it looked. The campgrounds are immaculate as usual so this was quite the shock. Anyone else see this and think the same?

we leave in 15 days for our first stay in the cabins, I hope things look better by then, that sounds awful. :(

We went to that pool the other day. The water was freeeeeezing!:sad2:

I didn't notice anything that looked trashy... I'll have to look again next time we go over there.

and head straight to the WL one if the weather warrants a pool day/night/afternoon/morning. Kind of a pita but I don't do cold water.

Your better off going to the WL pool. You have two hot tubs over that way as well.
The small pool in the cabin area, is unlifeguarded, and isn't much to look at.

It's not awful and I don't want to scare you off. I think it is just this road to the pool that has the back of some of the cabin areas. It just looks like they lost a bunch of trees so the area is just old dead tree stumps, roots etc. and it doesn't look very pretty. But I've stayed at the cabins before and just loved them. So, I'm sure you'll have a great trip.

I was there in MAY....and, well....it didnt appear TRASHY to me in ANY KIND OF way....granted...the brush clearing sucks...but the entire Fort has been hit with that. And Im fairly certain that some of the roots from the brush may have traveled through and tangled into the lattice of the cabins...so pulling the brush may have loosened some of the lattice work...but Im sure that will be handled shortly...and the pool, while smaller than the main pool, isnt "small", but Auntie is right...its VERY PLAIN, but perfectly clean and well maintained. It IS without a lifeguard, and when we were there last December, it didn't seem to be "heated to 82 degrees" like its stated to be...but I just figured we were expecting too much to think swimming in December was a good idea!!!

I dont know...maybe we saw the same thing, and I just didnt look down my nose at it.

Sorry to offend you in some way (although why is beyond me). There have been tons of landscaping, construction, improvements going on at FW as displayed by the pics here as well as people's reports. There are many many new plantings of various palm trees and smaller foliage all around my camp loop. These are watered daily and are filling in nicely to replace the fallen trees. So that is being tended too nicely. But, in my opinion, lattice pulling away from the cabins that I could see on the way to the pool, when it is way more than one occurrence is not "Disney style". It looks more to me like a YMCA camp in SOME areas than FW. :confused3

freezing water another story lol. Not really a big deal though, we'd planned to use the WL pool anyway, since we can. Why not!

For the price though, I will be dissapointed if there is lattice falling off! I'm sure we will love it though, that I'm not remotely worried about at all.

Hi! We were at FtW last weekend - and all the stumps & "trashy-ness" you speak of is from the clearing of vegegation. I cart around the cabin loops all the time just to see how full they are. I didn't notice any lattice skirting "flappin in the breeze" - but I wasn't looking, either. Was the skirting loose on a lot of cabins - or just a few?

The hurricanes were almost 5 years ago & FtW was cleaned up square away after each one.

And as OP's suggested - go to WL pool. It's heated! (I thought the little pool was too, but maybe not.)

No...IM SORRY!! After reading your response..I had to re-read mine, and that last line did sound snooty of me, I appologize...poor choice of words on my part. I meant "Maybe it just doesnt effect me the same way." or something to that nature.

No worries. Maybe it was just the road I was on (it does show the back of the cabin area). Maybe it is because it is winter here. Not sure. But the lattice was loose on several cabins and that is inexcusable to me. But as I said before...I've stayed at the cabins and loved them. So it could just be my view that I saw from my bike ride.

When we were there in October they were cutting some trees down so that would explain the stumps. I guess they were getting rid of some dead trees.

After seeing the areas the OP was talking about I can see what she is describing. The hurricane did a number on that areas.. the trees roots are all exposed as if the hurricane had washed all the dirt and top spoil from the area. There is some lattice falling off of cabins as well. But even with all the stuff happening... I wouldn't call it trashy... more in transision than anything.;)

First of all the cabins were built in a swamp. Yes, most of WDW property was swamp land, but the Fort has some very low areas and the cabins are in one of those areas. The trees you are seeing are swamp loving Cypress trees, mostly the knees and roots. Judging from the size of the roots and the base of some of the trees, the water was fairly deep in some areas (for a swamp).

You can't pick these "knees" and roots up as many of them are still firmly planted in the ground. So it's not that maintenance isn't being done, it's just that there's not much that can be done. The hurricanes of 04 did some serious damage. Many of these tree should come back, Cypress trees are pretty tough, but they need wet conditions to do so. They are worth the wait though as IMHO they are one of the most beautiful trees in Florida.

So, even though it looks pretty rough right now, down the road Mother Nature will return.

I have to admit maybe I just didn't pay attention on the main road when either walking or being on the bus but I can say that cabin 2703 was in immaculate shape and had outstanding mousekeeping (and a towel animal party but that's another post). The kids actually thought the cabin pool (used twice) was WARMER than the WL pool (used once). Go figure. In fact, at first, at WL they wanted to BACK to the cabin pool!

They got over that though :)

It was a little bare in areas but it matched all the pictures I'd seen so it met my expectations and was actually far more private than I think it comes across in the pics as the cabins look really close together but when you are in them, or even on your deck, they really don't feel that way!

DH and DSD ran twice and didn't comment on anything but I will admit we didn't explore all that much based on the time we had.

I think what Tricializ was talking about is the road you turn onto from Loop 2100 down to the pool. The Cypress trees got a buzz cut and now the stumps, knees and roots look terrible. They turn almost white when they dry out. I was thrilled as I thought I could snag some Cypress branches, but they are all still deep rooted. It does look pretty tough right now, but just wait til the rainy season. Many of the stumps should start sprouting.:yay:

I rode through the 2700 loop and it is beautiful. Very quiet too. I could see it being a real favorite for some folks. I liked the patios for the grills too. I want those over in the 2000 loop....it could happen, may...:confused3 .

We walked from 2700 to the Marina one day but I was just caught up in the pretty walk so didn't look very deep, it doesn't sound like I saw that road though. I had requested 2200 and after staying in 2700 would book there again in a heartbeat! It was just wonderful!
