What's the hype with the Monte Cristo Sandwiches?

I ate the cheese one (no meat, I'm a vegetarian), and I vomited shortly after eating it. I felt that the mix of figure and cheese just didn't work for me.. and it made me sick.

What am I doing wrong?? Everyone seems to love them! And I have to admit, I like cheese and chocolate together (I know.. I'm crazy), but this just doesn't make sense to me?

That question is one of the great mysteries of life!!:lmao::lmao:

My DH loves them, I don't eat meat or dairy, so I have never had one. But the idea of the deep fried and the jam and everything sound awful to me!!

To each his (or her) own!!

Cathy

The jam thing is, although quite odd, actually something I enjoy. It's kind of like eating turkey with cranberry relish...same idea...sweet fruit and savory food. The one component I could do without is the powdered sugar on top. I can only eat a slice, as it is way too rich for me, and I looooove greasy foods.

It's not for everyone. I can't eat more than half of one before feeling sick to my stomach but OMG do I LOVE them!!!!!! :) Normally DBF gets the MC and depending on where we are eating I get something else and we share. At CO I get a salad and a bowl of gumbo, he eats some of my soup & salad, I eat some of his MC, at BB I get the Tesoro Island Chicken (sooooooooooo good) and I eat some of his MC and he eats some of my chicken. FTR he doesn't have ANY problems finishing the MC all by himself, he just shared with me because he knows I love it and can't finish it. lol

One of these sandwiches feeds all 3 of us as it is too rich for any of us to eat a whole one. We however have the meat I'm not sure cheese only would add enough of the savory to offset the sweet. I agree with the turky/cranberry reference or like french toast w syrup and bacon on the side. I also agee the powdered sugar could go. It doesn't add anything and makes a mess. I have a deep fryer in my kitchen and greasy food doesn't usually get me but this puppy is rich and greasy not a vegetarian thing at all i wouldn't think. Both my cousins are vegetarians and I can't see them getting near it or their system being able to handle the grease if they did.

That's too bad you got sick eating that. It's awful to feel that way in the parks. I'm lactose intolerant and don't have an iron stomach, so the montecristo with all that gooey cheese would make also me a sick to my stomach. However, my DH loves the montecristo and orders the meat one at Cafe Orleans every time we go. He shares it with my DD15 because there's no way he can eat it all himself. I stick to my standard gumbo soup and pommes frites - both very safe to eat and highly recommended.

Wrongo! There are some people who really go for the Monte Cristo's but many people do not. I had it once and while I did not get sick, it did not make me want to have one again...

Surely you can ask for one without powdered sugar.

Tried a piece of my daughters and it did not sit well. Just can not do the grease running down my throat. Not again.

Hmm.. good points, thanks everyone! I think that maybe the cheese only may not have been enough to offset the sweet, as TheColtonsMom said. That was probably the issue.

Maybe I'll give it another try sometime, because the sound of it.. well, it sounds amazing, doesn't it? Deep fried cheese basically haha. Maybe I'll just see if it was a bad luck day. Who knows!

I may get lashed for this (sorry folks)...but I don't see the big fascination with Disney food in general. I always try to get myself psyched about it every time I go, and read on here what's recommended, etc....and I'm disappointed just about every time.

The past few times we've gone to Disney we've packed our lunch...and every afternoon I look at my husband and say how happy I am that I don't have that "blah" feeling from eating Disney food. I do like Disney's hot chocolate and popcorn :-)

Most of the snacks I'm ok with...it's the meals! And I've tried TONS! Monte Cristo, Hamburgers, Fried Chicken, salads, sandwiches...nothing was OMG to me.

So...we've been packing lunches (and saving money...another plus!) and not having that yuck feeling.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your Monte Cristo. Also sorry to hear you got sick from it. Thats horrible.

My husband and I tried one on our last trip after all the "hyped" reviews it was getting on here and all I can say is YUMMMMMMMMMMO!!!! Infact I'm craving one now(mouth watering). We can't wait for our upcoming trip so we can have another one!

I liked it when we tried it, but it is so rich we have to split. I didn't really put much jam on mine though. They are so heavy...but tasty. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get them each time though.

As for truly yummy Disney food, I like Bengal BBQ...everything is good there IMO. And its easy for snacking and meals on the go, too. We like to get one of each skewer and share them. YUM!

Rancho is so-so to me. Its not real Mexican food like we have in AZ (which isn't real "Mexican" food from Mexico either, but I digress) :)

Out of curiosity, have you ever been to WDW? And do you visit DLR on day trips or over multiple days?

I was a DL day tripper my whole life and held what I think is the day tripper mentality - Disney food is too expensive and time is wasted on dining at DLR. It was my WDW trips that showed me how dining can become part of the exeprience - if done right. It is not so much the quality of the food (at least for me) but how dining fits in to the overall experience.

To use an imperfect analogy, when I go to baseball games I must eat hot dogs. It is part of the experience. Even of the hot dogs are not that great (the ones at Dodger Stadium are the best ;)) it is still part of the experience.

My two cents...

Like the dogs at Dodger stadium, but I thought the King Dogs at the old Kingdome were over the top.

Yeah, I have to agree. To me, Rancho is on a par with Taco Bell. Not real Mexican.

we love the 3 cheese monte I will be having one on Sunday!

I think many people on this board (myself included) could not tolerate eating deep fried fat dusted with sugar! However to be polite I keep my opinion to myself unless asked. If you want a true sampling start new threads asking for honest opinions instead of reading "food porn" threads that self select people who enjoy DLR food regardless of it's nutritional value!

I am a day-tripper :-) We live a little over an hour from Disney, so we do go frequently. Usually 2x per year we stay overnight and make it a mini-vaca.

Interesting point about WDW. I grew up on the East Coast...last time I went to WDW was about 8 years ago. And I don't remember having any aversion ot the food there. This has been a recent phenomenon for me. And it wouldn't surprise me if subconsiously it does have something to do with the price.

The last two places we ate were Taste Pilots (which I used to enjoy) and then to the Main Street restaurant (zoning on the name) for the Fried Chicken. And both weren't great. I guess for me it's nothing *special*. It's chicken. It's overcooked greasy green beans. It's a burger. It's not that it's bad food....I just don't see where it's great food to get uber excited about.

Like I said, I like the snacks :-) I actually said to my DH that I want to try one of the corn dogs...those actually look good to me!

I know I'm not in the majority...and I love seeing everyone's excitement over the food. It's just not for me. I'd rather go out somewhere outside of Disney for dinner.

Speaking of which...this last trip we made, we went to a restaurant on Harbor that was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives called Mama Cozza's. It's on Harbor, about 5 minutes west of the parking structure. It was fabulous!!!
