What's the Great Movie Ride?

OK, I've been to WDW 3 times so far but I don't believe I have ever been on the GMR. I asked my hubby a couple times and he's told me we've been on it (he said it's something to do with an earthquake or something) I'm thinking he's wrong (and would LOVE to prove it, it possible) I just went through the Disney Photo of the Day thread and some where of the GMR. I don't EVER remember seeing that....there was Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, etc....

Can someone tell me where this is and exactly what it is? Thanks

The Great Movie Ride is behind the Hat at MGM. It's entrance is a recreation of Graumanns theater in Hollywood. You sit in a row of a large car and you journey through the movies. I like it. There are Audio Animatronic recreations of many movies including The Wizard of Os, Public Enemy, Mary Poppins, Tarzan King of the Jungle and there's a few surprises along the way.

Hi!
The Great Movie Ride is one of my favorites!!!

It is located in MGM inside the Chinese Theatre. The line for the ride is in front of a huge screen where they show old movie clips. Then you get on a large tram car and ride through movie scenes. There's Mary Poppins, Casablanca, Indiana Jones, Wizard of Oz, Fantasia and many more. At the end, you pull up in front of another large screen and see their "tribute to the movies". This could be where your husband is getting the earthquake from. There's one scene where there's a large boulder rolling and with the surround sound in the area, it kind of feels like an earthquake.
Hope all of this helps! :thumbsup2

I'm wondering if your DH has it confused with the Backlot Studio Tour.

I think your husband has it confused with the Earthquake ride at Universal Studios. The buses are similiar.

GMR is a lot of fun, and the final montage video is amazing. Don't be discouraged by the line either, it's deceptively fast moving.

Like "daisyduck123" said, he's got to be thinking of the Backlot Tour featuring "Catastrophe Canyon".
In a major part of this attraction, you ride on trams outdoors and view several "scene shops" (costumes and props), the "Earful Tower" (Water Tower) and some old props (vehicles) in the "Boneyard".

The "earthquake" part of his memory would be "Catastrophe Canyon" when the trams are shaken violently as fire and water effects are "thrown at" the guests.

IMHO, the GMR is sorta boring and outdated. I guess that's part of the point of the ride, though. It was fun to do once, I won't be doing it again. The park has a lot more to offer, like Fantasmic! :woohoo:

We love the GMR.

Here's the entrance-

My DS 9 & 10 love this ride!! They insist we go on it every time we are in MGM.

We love this ride. I know some people think it is boring or outdated (to some extent, I suppose) but I love it!!! The movies they incorporate are classics, IMO. There is only one part that I don't really care for but I won't spoil it for you. I love movies popcorn:: and the montage at the end is very touching. This is a must do for us.

I think the other posters answered your question about where it is and that your DH had it ALL wrong. :rotfl2:

Could ds (5) & dd (4) go on this? I've read and seen on different threads here that there is something about the Aliens movies in the GMR?

Dont' want to "spoil" for anyone but I'd like to go just need to be sure my little ones could too! :teeth:

Thanks!

We went a couple of weeks ago and my almost 5 yo dd went on it with no problem. I think she missed the "alien" and I did too until my other dd pointed it out and my reaction was "oh, that was the alien?"

I wish they would get rid of (or move) the Sorcerer's Hat so that the GMR would not be blocked anymore. It used to be such an awesome view when approaching the theatre.

I loved this the first time I went to Disney in 95' and thought it was great.

Unfortunately, this past week when I was there this attraction was really showing it's age.

First off - I'm sure they try hard, but the cast members hosting and 'on stage' in this attraction were AWFUL. Just awful. Hearing them has always been a problem, but there are microphones 'placed' for them to stand near when they do their 'off tram' bits.. and they missed them by a mile. You really just couldn't hear half of the 'gangster' bit..

Everyone in the tram was very confused because they just couldn't hear it.

I rode with two friends had never been to the Studios before and they thought it was just about the lamest thing ever.

It made me sad.

Love GMR

My favorite part is that of the witch.
It's one of the most advanced Disney animatronics ever created !!

It made me sad.

Its one thing I can always count on in dozens and dozens of trips to MGM... a less-than-stellar performance by the on-tram host(s) on the GMR.
And I really can't blame the HOSTS...
it doesn't help that the SCRIPT is just plain BAD.

NOBODY could make you believe those words.

That's why the "Jungle Cruise" is often so GOOD... when the skipper goes "off-script" with the funny puns, etc.
The JC hosts don't even TRY to make an artificial situation seem SERIOUS... they are free to "make light of it" and it WORKS (especially with a really talented comic/skipper).

But the GMR scripts are (I'm sure by "decree") followed nearly to the letter... and its just NOT BELIEVEABLE.

I don't call many things "lame", as the word can be hurtful (and certainly over-used), but in the case of the GMR script... it just FITS.

So why do I continue to ride?

The ride needs to be updated and the script work re-worked. The first time I saw it I thought it was great but now I consider it a big yawn and feel Disney needs some work on it.

The little kids should have no problem with the ride whatesoever.

The last time we were there we waited 40 minutes to get on the ride and after the ride was over felt like we could have enjoyed something else in the park. JMO.

I agree totally. The CMs are the worst part. I like the Jungle Cruise CMs better. GMR is the one of those that if I ride it every 5 years that's fine. It's inevitable that someone in my party will want to ride it and I have to grin and bear it. Next time, I'll just relax outside if someone wants to ride it. It's very tired!!! I read a rumor in the 2005 Unoffical guide that after Disney acquired Jim Henson that they wanted to make a spoof on the GMR and base it on Muppets. I think they probably scratched that idea.

I LOVE GMR! I don't think I've ever had a really bad CM... certainly not like Jungle Cruise. But I'm biased, since we had our wedding reception in GMR:

We have always lucked out with great CMs hosting the rides. As many times as we go through, my DS9 will point out the changes they have made to the film montage at the end.
