More and more I find people hanging out in my rooms silent for long periods of time. It took me a few weeks to figure it out but they are chatting via the trade window.

The more I see it the more I am uncomfortable with it. I know sometimes it is nice not to polute a busy room. I am not being nosey, I just want to know it all. :)

What does everyone think?

LOL! I think they're talking about you, Bellboy! ;) That's what I think! :rotfl2:

Oh great I knew it. What are they saying?:lmao:
Oh the drama, come on spill it...
And are you sure they are not laughing with me?

Well, I think it's a bit rude - here's why. Yesterday I went into a room with six or so people and two were community leaders - one person was on my friend list. I said "hi" as I came in and made a positive remark about the nice looking room. No one said anything at all to me! They were talking (not in trade window) about things. So I came in and had a seat. Then one person went afk and I said some other nice pleasant remark - like, "these chairs look great" (It wasn't that, but something very similar, just can't recall) and no one ever said hello, goodbye or go away - nothing! I went to my inventory then and did some shuffling - still no talking. THen I said, "well, bye" and I left. I don't get it? THis is from community "leaders'?? What kind of community is so rude? It made me feel very unwelcome - if they didn't want me there, why not just courteously request that i leave, or say, sorry, this is private right now, or something?

end of rant.

Interesting you should post this topic...

Just yesterday I was in a room with two vmk friends. I sent one of them a private message about a possible trade between the two of us.

After which, she told me she was reading it. I then asked both of them a question about something insignificant regarding the game. Neither of them answered me. I said, "Hello?! Anyone there?" After repeating this a few times, I decided that maybe they had dc or froze. So, I left.

Later I got a PM from each of them saying sorry, they were chatting. All I could think was, "Were they talking about me? How rude!" Then I decided I was paranoid. But I LOVE that you posted this. What could they possibly have had to say to each other that they could not share with me - unless it was indeed about me?

I think that in a room amongst friends is very rude. In a crowded room with lots of people, maybe it is different.

I can see why people use it, it's good because you don't get the chat turn off thing, which is really annoying when you're having a chat. But I can see why it would be so rude to ignore people, that's the problem with chat conversations. If I am in one I usually just say brb and close it to address the person using regular chat. Actually I find it annoying having those trade window convos because you miss a lot of what's going on, so I rarely use them. And I agree, in a room with friends it is very very rude. It's like sitting in real life, in a room full of friends, and taking one friend aside and whispering to them the whole time while ignoring everyone else.

I have to agree it is rude. I will add it to the list of cruddy things that people do here on VMK. I was on the fence, because other chat/IM utilities I use allow that and I dont mind it there.

VMK is a social community that is structured differently. If I want to talk to someone in private (so not to clutter a room or just to chat) I usually go to a different room. I just have always done that.

It really is wierd sitting in a room waiting for two people to like wake up. It is happening all the time now.

So stop talking about me, or at least make believe like you are trading will you.... Ah it could be worse. At least I know I am not the only one who sees this. Right. I am not paranoid or anything. What was that? I heard that...

I know I have been in rooms before where the room is silent but frequently we are all in a chat outside of vmk because we get annoyed by the dictionary... And before I started chatting outside of vmk I'd often be in a room where the two or so who were chatting would go quiet for a bit...

Now most of the time everyone who is in the room is in the chat too- and we just move around or talk occaisionally in the game- and frequently I will just get off vmk all together- and just chat- sort of like I ended up doing last night...

I have seen more and more people using the trade windows for chat though- I do not like to do that- at least when I'm using something outside the game I can talk to the people in the room- and try to say something

I do know the other day- there were many of us in a room and all were afk- in both vmk and in our chat lol- but they were doing other things like searching for something on the internet, doing work, reading email, dis boards, or dealing with those living people in the room...

So I know at times I have been guilty of being a non responder in a room- and I have been in rooms before when I seem to be the only one there.

I guess you just need to say hi- and assume afk- here are just a few of the things I've gone afk for in the past few weeks:
1. Baby let himself out the back door and was exploring
2. Same baby pushed stool to counter- climbed on counter and was emptying the pantry (the same pantry with child safety locks he's taught himself to open)
3. Same baby again- on different counter in kitchen- stirring the dry coffee in the cannister with a rather large butcher knife he got out of a drawer I can't seem to get into because of the stupid child lock
4. Same baby again- has rather dirty diaper that is in danger of creating larger mess with a leak or two.
5. Same baby grabs my glass sitting next to me- takes one drink safely then dumps the rest on the floor to splash in the puddle of water
6. You guessed it- same baby- starts stripping head to toe and decides then it would be a good time to go to the bathroom
7. DH/or one of the other kids- leaves my bedroom door open and- same baby discovers open door before me and is found on my dresser- on top of my jewelery box when I hear a crashing noise...
8. DD (fooled you there- thought I was going to say same baby didn't you?) comes inside the house in tears- because the little boys next door who she and the other girls have been harrassing have finally decided to pick and tease back- or little girls are fighting over something trivial
9. Food starts to burn
10. Phone rings
11. Some unexpected person shows up at my front door- and wants to spend time with me- not me with my lap top though.
12. oh Same baby- (snuck that one in) drops something on his toe- I think this last one was an old fashioned wash board that used to be hanging on the wall- but was down- or fell off sofa- or just got told no by someone and is throwing a tantrum

That is probably enough- I'm sure there are more... with more trivial things like my own bathroom breaks, something interesting on the news, just talking to my kids, helping with homework... etc

So I guess by all this- I'm saying- don't assume rudness- if the people don't respond- send them a pm in the game that you stopped by and to let you know when they return and go visit someone else- or go watch for people rambling on about boogies in all sorts of different public rooms :)

VirtuallyMe -

Sounds to me like your main vmk problem / issue is the aforementioned "baby" that seems to need attention constantly. What is the deal with that?!? :rotfl2:

Can't the baby tell you that you are busy in VMK?!? :lmao:

-Disney Dreams

P.S. Before anyone flames me - yes, I am SO kidding!

hmm, well, I dont know about the rest of you, but I rarely talk in VMK, as soon as you say anything to any one, you risk a ban, I click ignore on all trade wondows and friend requests becuase, quite honestly, I am not about to get a stupid ban for nothing because some little punk decides to report me for scamming for no reason what so ever, which, from all the stories here, happens alot. So if you come up to me, and I dont know you, chances are, I will ignore you, pretend you arent even there...

Two words for that baby "DUCT TAPE"

And I know how you feel about the ban. My kids are on all the time, and I am waiting for the ban for something they did...

Can't live in fear. A huge part of what makes VMK so much fun is the Social aspect of it. And that we are all Disney addicts.

If it happens to you, you always have your virtual friends to stick up for you.

I personally like the trade chat. Besides, if anyone wants to make fun of me, they seem to do it in the open! :D

I get so tired of people wanting to chat in the trade window.

I like to hang out in Captains Quarters and help people get started on the quests. I will be helping many at once and answering lots of questions. Then the trade invite pops up. 99% of the time I ignore it, but sometimes I accept out of curiousity. Then I get someone asking me the same questions I am answering already. I usually explain that we can discuss it in the room, so I can answer many at once (like how to get up to the desk).

Another annoying thing is people coming into my room and wanting to chat i the trade window, then when someone else comes in to talk, they think I am ignoring them, but I am really just tied up in trade window.

I would prefer to discuss things in open, so I can talk to more than once person at a time and not ignore others. I get frustrated enough in trades when people take so long, I don't like being tied up in the window.

If only we could be in trade and type in the room at the same time.

Malia... give my best to your guy in Iraq, and give him our "Thank you" too :)

I get annoyed when people try to chat in the trade window. I had one person start a trade window with me just to say "I thought it was cool that you're against taken" (it says Against taken in my sig). And that was it. So she had to open a trade window for that?

I pretty much ignore all trade requests now anyway...since most of them are always trying to get my ears. I'm like doc, I rarely chat on VMK and have only accepted friend request from those I've talked to quite a bit and "hang out" with on VMK (if you can call being in the same room hanging out LOL). I cancel all other requests. I'm just not risking it.

:lmao: OMG! This really made me laugh! I can so relate...
I have so many of my own :sad2: So much distraction in my house..
eg... Baby thinking he can run UNDER the table...sadly he is too tall
.......Baby madly pressing keys on my keyboard...his words are definitely not in the dictionary
.......Baby playing with teenager's iPod and the teenager freaking out...who new an iPod is drool-proof!
...... Baby thinking he can share the doggy toys...and the dog disagreeing
.......DH sending the baby in to see me... because baby is BEYOND stinky
...... and my all time favorite: Baby thinking he can share the doggy food

so if I am not talking...it is not that I am ignoring ANYONE on purpose..
