what's the cell phone rule

They are allowed to be in possession of them but they must be turned off in class. They cannot be on vibrate but must be off. If they are found to be on during class the phone will be confiscated and returned in 2 weeks. A parent has to come to the school to pick up the phone between 4 and 4:30 PM on a Fri. These are the only times the phones will be returned. This also applies to iPods.

This for high school.

I was just in our middle school today. The sign on the front door says, "Cellphones are only allowed during lunchtime. They must be turned off and put away at all other times".

DGD has one for emergencies only - but I don't know what the school rules will be this year because she's heading off to middle school..

Last year she carried it in her backpack - turned off - but never had a reason to use it..:goodvibes

Unless something changes this year, we don't have a school-wide rule.

In my classroom, my general rule is:

1st time: Warning...turn it off and put it in your backpack.
2nd time: I take the phone and return it at the end of the day.
3rd time: I take the phone and return it to your parents.

Anything after that, I turn it over as an office referral for disrupting class on a regular basis.

I will say that I also use common sense. If the phone rings once in September, then you forget it in March, I don't count that as a second offense. I wipe the slate clean every month.

At my high school phones had to be turned off and put away. That was the official rule, but it really depended on the teacher. Some teachers didn't have any problems with cell phones being out, while others did. If a cell phone was found the teachers were supposed to take it up and turn it into the front office where a parent could pick it up for $15. I only saw that happen once out of the 4 years I was there.

I actually had one teacher get so annoyed with people trying to secretly text under the desks and cell phones accidently going off (and no one owning up to the fact that it was their phone that went off) he actually made us put our cell phones on top of our desks for the whole class period and we weren't allowed to touch them. That way, no one was distracted because of texting and when a phone went off, he could know exactly whos phone it was. I thought it was pretty clever :rotfl:

Our middle school has a policy that the kids can have cell phones in their lockers during the day but can't carry them around, even off. The high school allows kids to carry the cell phones but can't use them in class, only during passing time and lunch time. I don't know what the consequences are for breaking the rules because our kids have never broken them.

Here in Mexico City, pretty much everyone has a cell phone now (kids - adults).

Not too long ago, I called one of the college kids we work with, and he answered his phone and started talking to me. After a minute or two, I got around to asking him where he was just then. He said that he was in class, and was taking a test. At first I thought he was kidding, but no, he said he was serious. I asked him if the teacher cared that he was talking on his phone during the test, and he said "no", that it was a pretty common occurence (not just him, but pretty much everyone in the class). Since then I've spoken to other kids (both college and high school), and pretty much all of them say the same thing - that you can use your phone anytime you want during class - even while taking a test.

My boys don't have cell phones, so I don't know the rules. I just thought that I would take this opportunity to lecture you on your decisions to allow your children to own and use a cell phone while at school...

Just Kidding...

I like this idea! Cell phones have probably led to a whole new level of cheating on exams.

at my school they are supposed to be off and in your locker all day. of course i dont know anyone who follows that rule. mostly we keep them on silent/vibrate in our pockets or purses. teachers mostly just make you put it away if it goes off and you can hear it. we arent supposed to use them in the building, but we have two different dissmissal bells, and after the first the're all out and nobody minds.

GOOD GRIEF! Now THAT I can't believe! Why wouldn't you just have someone google the test questions & get the answers or text the answers to you! Can't believe phones are allowed out during a test! At my college it depends on the teacher - I've had one tell me she'd lower our class grade by a letter if we were caught with the phone during class & then had another teacher that used her phone to txt during class...but NONE allow it to be seen during test time.

They aren't allowed to have them at all at the middle school, but IMO, too bad! Any kid within a 2 mile radius has no busing, and if they aren't going to provide safe transportation, then I think it's ridiculous to say those kids can't have a phone in case something happens on their walk to or from school, or if they are released early from extracurriculars. Also, they no longer have a pay phone in the school for those situations.

They are allowed to have them in their lockers at the elem. and high schools, but they provide busing. Not sure why the discrepancy.

Cell phones are not to be seen or heard during school hours, and that goes for phones on vibrate. Teachers capture cell phones from offenders, the child gets detention or in-school suspension(depending on past actions) and parent have to come to school to meet with the principal who will give the phone to him/her.

Last year our school started a new policy. All cell phones must be turned in at the office at the beginning of the school day. Anyone found with a phone receives in school suspension for one day. I thought it was going to be a disaster! Totally wrong! There is an envelope with each kid's name on it and the calmly take the envelope, put their phone in it and walk to class. At the end of the day, they line up, get their phone and get on the bus. It actually worked, much to my surprise. Keeping in mind it's a K-8 school so the number of young ones with phones is much lower than the older grades. All toll, I think we get about 150 phones a day in the bins. It also funtioned to put the phones that do not " make " the bins, much deeper underground so there aren't as many problems as previous years when the cheating and picture taking in school were both causing a problem.

I will preface this by saying it is totally subjective. Most teachers do not follow this rule because it is severe. My dd just graduated last yr and she said mostly the teachers would tell the kids to put it away, they would take it away and the kids that were not well liked got the severe punishment.

Straight from the book...

Beepers/Pagers/Portable Communication Devices/Laser Pointers/Cameras

Basically cannot be visible during school hours which are 5 mins before the initial bell and ends 5 mins after the dismissal bell.

Use of items will result in a 3 day in-school suspension.

If items are used to disrupt the environment you can be suspended 10 days out of school with a possible recommendation up to 180 days or expulsion.

Laser pointers are only allowed with specific permission from a teacher. 3 day in school suspension for that.

Students who are authorized by school officials to use a camera in class are exempt.

Our school has pretty severe penalties for using a phone during the school day. There is an escalating penalty for each offense, and at some point, a $100 fine kicks in.

This is high school.

One of my DD's friend missed an opportunity to get exam exemptions 1 semester last year because she earned a detention due to using her cell phone.

DD has her phone with her every day...but she knows that if she forgets to turn it off...the penalty she earns is... hers, and hers alone. Phones are OK before school/after school.
