What's the big deal about Teppanyaki?

We were planing to skip this one since we have some nice Japanese places near us at home. We love to watch the show. It sounds like the EPCOT place is like one of the ones here.

I don't think I have ever seen them have the fried rice already prepared. They make it at the table for the people who want it.

I would think it would be something fun for people who don't have a good Japanese steak place near them.

We have only been to a hibachi grill once before and loved it!! We are trying Teppanyaki for the first time in October and really looking forward to an entertaining meal... fried rice or not. But I am curious as to what type of dessert they offer. Does anyone recall?

I had the same question as the OP. Our local chefs may not be from Japan, but they are definitely Asian. Teppanyaki is cooked on a hibachi grill with everyone sitting around it right?

Do you sit on the ground or in chairs? (We have both in our area) - Nashville.

You sit in chairs.

We like going to Teppanyaki, but don't go every trip. Sometimes when we go we are on DDP, other times we haven't been. We've always had a nice meal, the food is always served hot. The chefs are good and authentic. (In my area many of our teppan chefs are not). Also, since we are normally a small group (3) it's nice to sit with others and get to know them.

My DD too recieved an oragami swan the last time we ate there (Jan. 05) and she asked the woman to show her how to do it, which she gladly did, so she came home with 2 swans. The staff has always been extra nice to my DD, which as a mom, I really appreciate.

When paying OOP, my DM and I will usually each order something different (scallops, shrimp or chicken) and then share it. The chefs have never had a problem splitting it up for us so we get the benefit of a combo, without the extra $. We do the same thing here at our local Teppan. (I.E. scallops are $20 and chicken is $19. $39 total for 2. Scallops and chicken combo is $23 x 2 = $46. Savings $7 )

When I want sushi, however, I either eat at Tempura Kiko, or in Matsunomo lounge (where you can see Illuminations at 9:30-shhh! alot of people don't know this. )

I know that at the Japanese show steakhouse down the street I have asked for plain white rice and have been told over and over - It comes all mixed in a package, we don't have any white rice. They pour the whole thing on the grill and add sauce to it but it is prepackaged. Haven't ever seen anyone do it with fresh rice and veggies.

Yeah, I wish they had better desserts. Even though I'm so stuffed I can't eat another bite I still manage to have a bowl of orange sherbert.

My mom got the green tea ice cream last year. It was good. Like a frozen green tea.

We're excited about trying it because we love the general style of the food/presentation and don't have a Japanese steakhouse near us. It has become a vacation ritual of sorts; it doesn't matter if we're at Disney or at Cedar Pointe or Boston or Virginia Beach - at some point on the trip, we find a Japanese steakhouse to enjoy, since we can't get it at home.

Ewwww. Every one we've been to has done it up fresh. If I want pre-packaged fried rice, I'll grab a $3 lunch special from the take-out Chinese place in town. For Japanese steakhouse prices, I expect the food to be fresh.

Fried rice is not Japanese, it's Chinese. That's why it's not in Japan.

Thats only partly true. If you visit Japan they have fried rice at many restaurants. If this sort of thing were adhered to then Italy in EPCOT could not serve pasta, because it too is Chinese.

Now don't flame me, becuase I LOVE fried rice.... but....

Fried rice is NOT Japanese. They do serve fried rice in Japan (along with hamburgers, pizza, etc.).

The other thing to factor in is... white rice is CHEAPER. Think about the $ saved over that many diners in a year.

Just try to think that you are having an "authentic" meal and white rice would be served at such a meal.

If you really need fried rice, go over to China and visit the lotus blossom

I visit Benihana quite frequently in my hometown. We tried Teppanyaki a few years ago & it was ok, but not as good as Benihana. I probably wouldn't go back as I'd rather try the other restaurants WDW has to offer.

Green tea ice cream, to me, taste very creamy and just a little like green tea. The first time I tasted it I didn't care for it (here at a local restaurant) but that was about 30 yrs, or so ago! (I was a very young at the time! 17!) Now I really like it, though it is hard to describe. Maybe if you go to Teppanyaki, they'll let you try a little to see if you like it?
