What's the big deal about gmail?

There seems to be much "to-do" over this, but I'm in the dark. Other than knowing I need an "invitation", I don't know why it's so special. Can someone enlighten (or invite) me?

the space you get is one of the things people are talking about another is provacy, it will have search capabilities and they are afraid that the search will make invading privacy too easy.

This part I'd heard, but that's why I can't figure out why people are clamoring for invites! I'd like to see what the big deal is, but I'm not willing to prostitute myself for it. LOL!

My friend was all excited about it because she was able to get the exact e-mail addy she wanted. Since it's pretty new and somewhat limited - not everything has been taken yet.

Not a huge deal - but it would be nice to have your 1st choice accepted instead of getting "user name already taken" for your 1st 30 choices like some other places!
