What's the best way to store bread?

Keep loaf on counter and rest in freezer until needed.
Never had a loaf go moldy.

We keep our breads in the fridge. They last quite some time. Almost never have any issues with mold.

I usually put my store bought, sliced bread in my refrigerator. I have been told that this is wrong and I should store it in the freezer and just take out and thaw slices as I need them.

Checking online I see there's all sorts of advice out there - use a bread box, use a bread bag, store it in a cabinet, etc.

So I was wondering if anybody wants to share how they store bread. I buy whole wheat sliced bread that's in a plastic bag.

Thanks! :)
I think it def depends on where you live, temps, humidity, bugs ....

We keep ours in the fridge, we are hot humid south.

If I had time to thaw bread every time I needed it I wouldn't be making sandwiches etc ~ bread is basically fast food here.

It takes DH and I about a month to use up a loaf of bread, so it is in the freezer and we take it out by the slice. We are usually toasting it to eat, so that works fine. Not big bread eaters, lately we have been buying Dave’s Killer bread. It holds up well to freezing.

We don't use enough so definitely the freezer. I try not to overbuy though because they end up in the freezer for too long. I wish they sold hamburger buns in packages of 4 and not 8! There's only two of us now and we don't have hamburgers that often. I try to remember to use them to make parmesan cheese toasts as our carb at dinner occasionally so they don't get totally freezer burned.

It took me years to convince my DH that it goes bad if it's not in the freezer. He kept taking the whole loaf out because he doesn't like to deal with it frozen. I finally had to resort to letting it stay out and go bad so he would finally believe me.

I buy baked goods from the bulk bins or bakery counter whenever possible so I can just get the few we need. Loaves of bread are where it gets tough. Our in-store baked ones are generally much smaller than the commercially baked ones so I usually buy that and just resign myself to some of it potentially being wasted, unless somebody in the house gets on a sandwich or toast jag.

This way.....

Goes in the pantry with the bag tightly closed. Lasts quite a long time for us.

We usually keep it in the fridge. We don't use it quickly and bread tends to get moldy fast when it's left out at room temp. If I buy multiple packs or loafs, the ones not being used immediately go in the freezer until I need them, then they move to the fridge.

The only bread slices we throw away usually is the heels (end pieces). Neither one of like it and usually have another loaf out of the freezer by than.
I've sent my home address to you in PM. Please send me the heels if it's the sliced Italian breads. I butter them up and pile the spaghetti up and fold it like a spaghetti taco :teeth:

I just keep it on the counter. We have a little tiny section of counter between the stove and fridge - I keep the bread and chips there. I do usually throw away some of a loaf because we don't use much bread, but it usually lasts about 3 weeks.

Why would the fridge be bad for bread? The Ezekiel bread esp needs the fridge.
Freezer would be way too bothersome, first, it would take up too much space and second, I would get super annoyed waiting for it to defrost every time.

Depends on the bread. I keep all my imported French bread stuffed in a Michael Kors bag hung in a walk-in freezer. It makes me feel like I'm thieving from debutantes in Paris, which adds some bourgeoisie flavo(u)r to the bread. And before one of you gets your hackles up, those were the strict instructions from Jean Güché, and not at all by my design.

I've been told it can dry out the bread, although I can't say I've had that problem much. Like many here, my routine is to put it in the freezer at first and move it to the fridge when the previous loaf runs out.

Thanks for the posts, everybody! :)

The kids bread goes in the pantry. Mine goes in the freezer because I don't eat it fast enough before it molds otherwise. I pop it in the toaster when I want some.

We all prefer our bread toasted. So we store in the fridge and take out slices at a time to pop in the toaster/toaster oven. We do usually buy sprouted grains or sourdough bread and those are easier to split up when frozen. White bread is more likely to stick together and tear.

I have had good luck and long bread life by keeping bread products in the vegetable "crisper" in the fridge. That keeps it fresh for a long time and if it gets a little dry, a quick 10 seconds in the microwave fixes it right up.
