Do you ever have a situation where someone is complaining about something and you just want to say "what's it to you?"

My situation is with my mother and Halloween. I have always made my children's costumes. It's fun. I enjoy doing it, and they enjoy coming up with a costume idea and helping me find the pattern, materials, etc. They get excited as they watch it progress.

But my mother (who is back staying with me for another month or so) hates Halloween. She keeps saying I should just buy their costumes, and has said something snotty about it every time the subject comes up.

I just want to say to her - why do you care?? You're not making the costumes, what's it to you if they are homemade or store bought? (But I couldn't say that to my mom. I'll just complain about her behind her back, here on the DIS).

What's your "what's it to you" moment?

Just "Smile and Nod". It'll drive her nuts!

I also enjoy helping my son bring his halloween creations to life. These are his best:

I just never had the talent to make halloween costumes for my son. I envy you.

The one on the left is AWESOME!

Personally, I think the homemade costumes are much better! I don't remember ever having a store bought costume as a child and DS only had one in his 13 years and that was the year he HAD to be Buzz Lightyear. We usually sew a costume from scratch (or pattern) or piece together a costume from what we have or can find at thrift stores. The costumes from home are more unique and individualized than the ones bought from the store. At home we've done...Mickey Mouse, Cardinal baseball player, executioner, wizard, military accident victim, ghoul, and dragon slayer.

As for my "what's it to ya moment"...probably too many to mention...but when others try to tell me how to spend my money or what clothes to wear, or that I don't have any business doing this or that...hey, it's my life! What's it to ya?

I think I'd just tell her "Mom, we enjoy this - leave it be". It sounds like she's like me and doesn't really enjoy it and just assumes you don't either.

I loved these pictures!! I started a new thread just to see more pics like these!!

Thanks for sharing!!

DisneyVillain - those are fantastic costumes. That headless one was really creepy! Perfect!

dd9 is going to be Felicity, from the American Girl series (which she was last year, but of course she needs a new Felicity dress!). My son wants to be a race car driver, and dd2 is going to be Cinderella, the costume she chose herself after looking through all my costume patterns!

They were going to be Harry Potter, Hermione and Hedwig the owl - but that plan fell apart when we received the American Girl catalog advertising the new Felicity movie. Once dd9 dropped out of the "matching costumes" idea, the other two followed suit.

Which is kinda frustrating, since I had already made two wizard's robes and was shopping for fake feathers!! But that's okay.

I will post pics as soon as I am done.

The irony of the situation with my mom, is that we always had homemade costumes when I was a kid. She just hated doing it all along! Now that I think of it, they were always no-sew costumes, usually involving a cardboard box (I was a TV, a dice, a playing card, etc)

My MIL is the same way, I just smile and ignore it. She's thinks I'm nuts anyways!

Terrific costumes BTW

I tend to make my costumes. Every year I dress to scare, or freak out. I'll buy stuff for the costume (fake blood, teeth, fur) but I usually make my own. Last year I was a vampire (had this great roar and scream to make people jump) I was a witch (not green, sorta pasty and dead looking) the year before that. This year my friend and I are going to do either dead students (bookbag, uniforms, whole nine yards) or dead prom queens. Dead cheerleaders, also a possiblity.

I don't know why people feel they can voice their opinion on things that have nothing to do with them...is she helping you make them every year? if not then she should shut the heck up. Its up to you and the kids...if they want store bought and you make them then I can see it being a problem..but a problem between you and them..not anyone else!

I loved those costume pics!!

If you like doing it, keep on doing it. I'm sure it means a lot to your kids.
