What's an "animal" to you?

Hmmm. . and here I thought it was really simple. I define animal as anything that isn't a mineral or a plant.

or a bacteria, or a plant, or a fungus, ....

All are part of kingdom animalia, and therefore scientifically classified as animals.

I just helped my dd study for her science test on animals. They are all animals. They just belong to different groups.

1. Mammals
2. Reptiles
3. Amphibians
4. Birds
5. Fish
6. Insects/bugs

I answered the poll before reading the responses... it depends on the context. I don't think most people would respond with "humans" to the "what is your favorite animal" question.

The question in the OP was how we use the word animal. Not what constitutes an animal. I almost never refer to people as "animals" regardless of their scientific classification.

If it is alive, and it is not a plant (flora) then it is an animal (fauna).
