What's a good used car for a teen with a $10,000 budget?

Have a 2005 Ford Focus that has 60k miles on it and runs like a champ. Best small car and gets good mileage as well. Haven't had any issues with it but then again it gets regular maintenance.

This reminds me of a story my manager told me when working at Disney. She was behind a large truck that started to come to a sudden stop on the highway. She didn't have time to stop and avoid hitting the truck, so she swerved to the shoulder. Her Honda Odyssey slammed straight into the median wall. It crushed the entire front end, but the cabin of the car was intact. If she didn't, the front of her car would've ended up under the truck, and she could've been pinned even worse. The cops or paramedics on the scene said if she was driving anything else she would've been crushed and killed. She said she'd never drive another brand of car.

Just one more person saved by driving a Honda.

Originally DD was going to get our Mini, but although it has not required a lot maintenance when it does it will be expensive so we started looking for something different. Every car I researched I also got an insurance quote on from, Bugs to Cubes...civics were one of the more expensive cars to insure in part due to a high theft rate. What we ended up with was an 08 Toyota Yaris...with 32K miles and basically brand new condition and it was $8400 sticker but with tax and tag it came just under 10K, it is a great little car! DD will get her permit in August and that is what she will drive whenever we are in a vehicle together and on her 16th it will be hers.

I saw chl2 posted the link to the WSJ article re good cars for teens.:drive: The cars on it that likely would meet your criteria:

Subaru Legacy 2005-09 (you'll need to look at the older end to stay in budget; '09 models are closer to $18k. Don't know where you are, but Subies are great in bad weather.)

Honda Accord 2003-07

Not on top of the list, but also mentioned as good choices, the Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion. The related slideshow on-line also includes the Chevy Malibu '04-'07

They don't generally recommend SUVs for teens (esp. large ones, b/c too tippy and hard to handle), but have added some smaller ones:

Honda CR-V '05-'06
Subaru Forester '03-'08
Toyota RAV 4 '04-'05

Some larger cars recommended (not sure if mileage meets your criteria):
Ford Five Hundred '05-'07
Mercury Sable '08-'09

Hope this helps!

Be sure to check insurance costs on the car before buying a foreign car. We DS21 was going to start driving, I checked and getting him a new Mustang was cheaper on insurance than getting him a Honda or Toyota. Needless to say, both he and DD20 had Mustangs for their first cars.

Go to the public library and check out the Consumer Reports April issue. They cover this in great detail. It's well worth your time and effort.

I am the youngest of three boys in my family. We were born 3 years apart from one another. SO, what that means is that my parents could have potentially had three male drivers under the age of 21 on the insurance at the same time.
To prevent that from happening, my parents made a deal with me that if I waited until I HAD to get my license, they would buy me a car. They had similar arrangements with all three of us if we waited until we 'had' to have a license.
So the summer I graduated high school Dad and I started looking for a good used car. My two older brothers went to college and still lived at home, but that wasn't what I wanted to do, so I was going to need a car that was a lot more reliable, and able to take longer trips than my older brothers.
I wasn't at all selective about what type of car, so that made the search that much easier.
I ended up getting a 1997 Suzuki Esteem with 45,000 miles on it for $4,500
I finally sold the car for $500 in 2006 and it had almost 145,000 miles on it.

The only repair that was done on the car was a clutch replacement, and I had to have to the right front tie rod replaced two times. That was about $120 each time.

So to invest less than $1,000 in car repairs and put around 100,000 miles on it - I think that was a great deal!

My next car was a 2006 Ford Focus and I never had to do anything other than change the oil in the 5 years that I owned it.

With the cost of new smaller cars coming down - you might want to check out the price of a NEW Ford Fiesta. Ford is doing amazing things their smaller cars!

If you want to stay away from high cost small repairs, avoid 'luxury' imports if at all possible.

My daughter will be getting my 05 Honda Civic in the next six months or so. It is a great car, has fabulous gas milage and is in really good shape. Now I just have to find a new car for myself :cool1:

Someone mentioned a hatchback -- thanks for the reminder on trunks. DS15 has a large instrument case and will likely be transporting his (and friends') instruments around. I am good with him driving a compact car (we are a Honda family) but I do need to get some measurements of trunk openings.

Something to think about with athletic equipment, instruments, props, etc. ...

I am going to have to talk with our insurance agent about rates/theft, etc. too. Phoenix area is high-auto theft because many go bye-bye to Mexico.:sad2:

Thanks for all of the input. I really appreciate. I did contact our agent today and she emailed back. She listed Honda accord over civic, Toyota Camry over Corolla, and Mazda 6 over 3. This is exactly how she wrote it. She did not say why one over the other. I did tell her I wanted to look at insurance cost as well as safety. I will have to do more research tomorrow.

And the gas costs for the ones she preferred are going to be higher, so you need to weigh all the factors.
