Hi Canadian DIS Pals...my DW & I just got back from Toronto, where we were with our DS's HS band for a music competition, and we saw these restaurants with Firkin in the name ( Goose & Firkin, Owl & Firkin, etc..). So I need to ask...What's a firkin? They all seemed like pubs or something similar. Those of us parents on the trip were having a blast with the name as you might expect from band parents ;) Toronto was wonderful...what a beautiful city. Thanks for putting up with a "just for fun" thread :thumbsup2

Hi ... I am glad you enjoyed Toronto :cool1:

Firkin are pubs and there is about 30 in Canada and the chain has a few in the U.S. too. You can check out their website to find out more :goodvibes

Thanks Princess4Eeyore...and as your fav would say: Thanks for noticing my thread :eeyore: And we can't wait to go back to Toronto on our own..we loved it

The origin of the name is an old English unit of measure for beer (like a barrel).
the name has been used in many pubs throughout UK ....and Canada

Thanks for asking the question! I myself have wondered what a Firkin was!?! :lmao: :lmao:

Next time you come to our fair city, let us know and we can adivse you on all the great spots plus we could set up a meet!

Wee-Haggis...Thanks for the update. We were wondering if Firkin had something to do with beer or ale :drinking1 I really enjoyed your Canadian beer while on our trip. My DS's HS band's nickname is the Highlanders...with a screen name like yours I thought you'd enjoy that ;)

Scratch42...We will definitely take you up on your offer :thumbsup2 We really enjoyed our brief tour of your great city. We did the Hippo tour & we also did a downtown tour. We also went to Medieval Times & Wonderland. Everyone on our parent bus (42 in all) raved about Toronto.

The Firkin pubs are a wonderful franchise of "British" pubs in Canada -- all developed using a well crafted theme (lots of red and black) and utilizing the same menu across the franchise. Generally, if you've eaten in one Firkin you've seen the menu in them all.

Now as to the OPs question -- a firkin is the British historical name for a barrel with a 9 gallon capacity. The French had a different classification system with a completely different list of names.
