Whatever happened to...

Yahoo Serious (born Greg Pead) became one of Australia's most successful independent conceptual artists and filmmakers of the 1980s and 1990s. Considered the first Australian to write, produce, direct and star in a major motion picture, he legally changing his name to "Yahoo Serious" in 1980 before his sudden fame. He grew up near Newcastle, Australia and worked as a tire fitter for a time to get through art school, but was eventually expelled from the school. Soon after he started combining his artistic talents with absurdist comedy and earned a lot of skeptical looks along the way. At age 21, Yahoo wrote, produced, directed and filmed Coaltown, a documentary tracing the socio-political history of coalmining. The following year he won the National Award for Best Australian Educational Documentary for his TV series "Lifestyle." After extensive traveling throughout Asia, Europe and America, he began writing, directing and performing in experimental comedy. This led to spectacular success with his first weird, skimpily-budgeted vehicle Young Einstein (1988), the story of a young Tasmanian farmer who discovers rock music along with the theory of relativity. Blending political/social satire, silliness and slapstick with eye-popping visuals, he hit the jackpot with young audiences. Grossing over $100 million, he instantly branched out internationally, hitting all the popular talk shows and even making the cover of TIME magazine (February, 1989). Audiences took a fascination to his unique cinematic style. True to form, Serious involved himself in practically every detail of the making of the movie, from creating the original concept and script through incorporating the visual design and music soundtrack and performing all his own stunts. However, following this crazy rollercoaster ride, he was not able to produce a follow up movie soon enough and quickly became yesterday's news. Coming out five years later, Reckless Kelly (1993), the story of a Robin Hood-like, motorcycle-riding robber who becomes a Hollywood movie star, matched his first film in unconventional silliness but not popularity and disappeared quickly. His third movie, Mr. Accident (1999), about the most accident-prone man in the world, also was a commercial disaster while still finding a cult following. Who knows what's up this unique artist's sleeve next.

Have you ever gone to www.tvtome.com ? It's awesome. I've become obsessed with looking up people from old sitcoms. The biggest shocker??

Remember that show Kid's Incorporated? The youngest girl, Stacey? She's Fergie from Black Eyes Peas! That blows my mind! :earseek:

What became of Philip Michael Thomas aka Tubbs

I was watching Fried Green Tomatos the other day and got to wondering about Mary Stuart Masterson. I wonder what ever happened to her?

She was on Broadway last year in the musical NINE playing the wife of Antonio Banderas.

As I sit here watching reruns of Match Game, what ever happened to Gene Rayburn, Brett Somers and gang? Am I showing my age?

I don't consider myself old, but I remember those folks, and now they're on the Game Show Network. Funny stuff! :)

Gene Rayburn died at the age of 81, on November 29th, 1999. Gene's wife, Helen died in 1996. Gene retired after The Movie Masters, and in 1998 relocated to Los Angeles. Before his death, he moved back to New York. He remained quite sharp and able at his age, and even at his old age retained that goofy grin. Gene is missed dearly by many game show fans.

He used to have a condo on Cape Cod, in the town we stayed at, and when I was about 7 he almost ran my sister and me over on our bikes as he went speeding down the street! At least, we know he had a condo there and we're pretty sure it was him. He growled at us. :)

I've got two! Whatever happened to Shields and Yarnell? And what about that group, Momenshans (sp?)?

Mummenshanz! I remember them on Sesame Street. Or the Electric Company. One or the other. Anyway, they're STILL around.

In the beginning, there was MUMMENSCHANZ…

For David Copperfield, Mummenschanz is simply "truly magical", for Dario Fo, their art is "not just creative, it is a creation". The group became popular with its play with skurilen masks and forms, with lights and shadows, and with their subtle choreography. There is not one spoken word; nevertheless, a thousand stories are told… Mummenschanz was founded with its particular name Mummenschanz in 1972 from the two Swiss, Bernie Schuerch and Andreas Bosshard, and the Italo-American Floriana Frassetto. They were going to create a new form of theatre for today's world. Despite being so different among themselves, their common goal to create a theatre without words, a theatre without linguistic and cultural borders, unified the three. Their first significant break-through was at the theatre festival in Avignon which brought them engagements in Berlin, USA, Canada, and South America. In 1974 and 1975 they played in Europe as well as Eastern Europe. The creative trio refined and purified their play further, steadily developed new ideas and new materials which led to the creation of more poignant shapes and more magic creatures. MUMMENSCHANZ ON BROADWAY 1979 led to their break through at Broadway. They played for three years on Broadway, which was neither before nor after them ever achieved by another theatre group performing silent theatre, without lyrics or music. Now the world was theirs. Mummenschanz emerged to a new terminology, yet a synonym for a new style in the art of theatre. TIME TO RE-ADJUST The early passing away of Andreas Bosshard in 1992 was a terrible tragedy for the group. Floriana Frassetto and Bernie Schuerch needed time to overcome it. After a hard battle with themselves, they decided to engage the American John Charles Murphy, and studied the new program Mummenschanz Parade with him. They went back on tour in 1993 and continued their previous success story. A significant step in a positive direction was the foundation of the Mummenschanz-Stiftung by their friend and supporter Hans Joerg Tobler in 1998. This also meant to move into a new atelier, provided by the city of St. Gallen, contriving optimal circumstances for the creation of MUMMENSCHANZ "NEXT". Floriana Frassetto studied at the Academia Alessandro Fersen and the School of Pantomime in Rome. She gained her experience on stage touring with the pantomime group "I Gesti" until she met Bernie Schuerch and Andres Boshard in 1972. Mummenschanz is her most important meaning of life. She transforms her ideas into the play with an excellent sense for colors, shapes and effects. After completing the actor academy in Berne, Bernie Schuerch studied at the School of Lecoq in Paris. In 1969, Schuerch and his college friend Andreas Bosshard were touring with different clown theatre groups. In1972 they founded together with Floriana Frassetto the Mummenschanz theatre. Ever since, Mummenschanz has been his creative passion. Raffaella Mattioli from Italy, started with classical dance education in Rome and London, with Yuriko, Pearl Lang, Mary Hinkson, Noemi Lapzon and others. She performed as a dancer and actor for theatres everywhere. In 1989, she went to Prague as a choreographer to Laterna Magica. She was responsible for several contemporary theatre productions for festivals. Jacob Bentson from Danemark studied as well at the School of Lecoq in Paris. He then played with several independent ensembles on multiple tours. From 1978 to 1980, 1986 and 1988, Bentson worked with Mummenschanz. At the same time he continued his studies in painting and sculpturing, teaching and specialing himself in the creation of masks. Today, he is working as an actor in the silent as well as in the spoken theatre, and as puppet player and regisseur.
