What would you think of a waitlist thread?

I was thinking about this today, before you put in your waitlist you could look at the thread and get an idea of what resort has the most waitlist requests by month, date, room size, and category. That way you could put yours in for a resort that you may have a better chance of getting, especially if you are flexible. DVC could also easily build something like this...my library can tell me how many people are ahead of me for a book, they could list the # of people on a waitlist for a month or time period. Something like you have 5 waitlist ahead of you for a studio...

But it's not simple and it's not like the library, where everyone wants the same thing.

You might be the 4th person to request something, but the 8th person on the list might get his/her waitlist filled ahead of yours. Filling a waitlist depends on what is cancelled and what is requested. You could be first in line (based on time of submittal) and yet someone who just got in line a few minutes ago gets one or more of the nights you wanted. The waitlist does not hold cancelled nights hoping the others you need show up. Cancelled nights go to the first waitlist that can be filled (or the first person to book it. The waitlist match program is not run continuously, so sometimes you can catch a newly cancelled night in between runs. This is why many both waitlist and "stalk").

For example, assume this is the waitlist (check in - check out) in order by the date the waitlist was submitted:

Mary wants 9/29 - 10/3
Alan wants 10/2 - 10/9
Sue wants 9/28 - 10/2
John wants 10/2 -10/3

Suppose a 7 night cancellation occurs for 9/25 - 10/2. What happens - assuming no stalker picks up any nights before the match program runs? Sue gets her waitlist (9/28-10/2) and the nights 9/25, 9/26 & 9/27 go back into inventory. Mary, Alan & John remain on the waitlist.

Now suppose a cancellation occurs for 10/1 - 10/3. John gets his waitlist and 10/1 goes back into inventory. Mary & Alan remain on the waitlist.

DVC can't reliably tell you anything about where you stand on the waitlist.

I would like it and think it would be useful.

Structure could be:

Resort
Dates waitlisted ( + means seperate waitlist while - means a multiday waitlist)
Room type (including view category)
Dates already booked

It's not perfect but it is helpful I think to ge an idea on chances based on at least people who visit here.

Sounds like a lot of work to keep current for something like that to be useful. If anyone wants to start & maintain such a thread, they are certainly free to do so.

I guess I am not sure exactly how it helps when there will be thousands of owners who have waitlists in that won’t be listed.

It would also require people to remember to post when it fills, or if they cancel, or get the room via stalking.

I think if you pay attention and look at what is available or not at seven months through those really handy charts, you have a pretty good idea already about how deep a waitlist is and what your chances are.

I don’t think this would obviously be 100% accurate or all inclusive but to me , the idea seems to be allowing others to get a general idea of which rooms are in high demand?

That's the idea, but it practice, its no more likely to be accurate than just an general understanding of booking patterns, and much more difficult to maintain or gather information from.

Actually even more useful would be a thread where DVC members post reservations they are about to cancel, but I guess there’s an ethics issue there.

There's no ethics issue there. Just like the dining cancellation posts. There's a FB group from here that posts cancellations.
