DH bought me a shredder! I am actually happy about it--we have all of our old letters from when we were dating--he lived in NJ for about 9 months and I wrote him EVERY DAY--then some other ones when I lived in a dorm--cards, etc.--and the kids are getting inquisitive--they are going first.
Also, I understand it's best to shred credit card solicitations, etc.
What else would you shred?

   Please don't shred your old love letters! Keep them under lock and key, if you must, but please, please, please don't shred them! When you are old and withered, you will appreciate reading them again. But I understand what you mean about keeping them from prying eyes!
I shred very old bills (a few years old at least) and credit card solicitations and anything private or personal that I don't need anymore. Then, I separate the shreds and toss them out a bit at a time (so they can't be taped together), in different places (my office, my home, my parents' home). Am I paranoid?:p :p :p

Well.....if you do any scrapbooking or crafts you can use it to shred cardstock and then make quilling projects with the shredded pieces of paper, or you can shred paper to use as gift bag filler.:D

I shred almost everything after a year, I keep only things that relate to taxes or bank / finance statements longer than that. Everything else goes to the shredder. Also mailings with credit offers or promotional checks.

It is great to use for tissue paper for gift wrap too :) So much easier than trying to cover something in a bag with sheets, the only problem is that kids can make a pretty big mess with shredded tissue paper

I shred alot of things....old bills, bank statements, receipts from the bank, charge card statements from restaurants or stores, credit card solitations, anything with an address or phone number on it from a friend, any personal documents. Whenever I'm in doubt, I just toss it into the shredder and away it goes.

if my DH got me a shredder for a Christmas present, he'd be my FIRST contestant...;)
