What would you have done? .........

You did the right thing. Strangers coming towards our door are treated to a cujo like greeting from our dog. Few get up the nerve to even ring the bell.

I would have called the police too and I would be very surprised if they acted like it was a nuisance. We had kids playing this little game around the same time a few summers ago. We live across the street from a park and they would come ring our bell and then run back up to hte park. I watched them do this from our bedroom window. Then I called the police who came and picked them up. (The very smart police sent one car down our street with a searchlight on and one car up the connecting street with no lights on so when the kids tried to take off, they ran straight into the other officer.:rotfl: )

Several weeks later, at about 10:30 our doorbell rang. At this point I was ticked. I have little kids sleeping for goodness sake! I went and yanked open the door to this sort of grungy looking teen (s, yes, I made assumptions :headache: )and said, very rudely "WHAT?" Poor kid says, "I am sorry to bother you, but there is a car out here with it's lights on inside and I just didn't want your battery to go dead." Maaaan, did I feel crappy. It wasn't our car which I told him and thanked him for trying and also told him we had been having trouble with kids at the park and I was sorry I assumed he was just being a pill. He said, "It's okay. A lot of kids my age can be jerks." I tell ya, I wanted to find out where this kid lived so I could tell his parents what a great kid they had. Hopefully they already knew.

I don't think that I would have called myself, but you did the right thing for you, and that's what the police are there for.

With home invasions at an all time high, you did the right thing. My alarm system is aways set at night and I wouldn't hesitate to hit the "police" button.

I'd of been scared out of my wits :scared1: , I definetely would've called the police but NO WAY am I turning on the lights and going down there. That's super super scary at 2 am.

Calling the police was probably the right thing to do said:
Shirleyb, That's how I felt. Particularly because when the police came they said they had no seen anyone leaving my house, or around my house, or even a car on the street. (Maybe that's why I got the impression they thought I was a little 'nutsy' ;) ) But I guess I figured better safe and feeling slightly silly than sorry.

Thanks, everyone for the support. Guess I shouldn't worry what the 'impressions' of the policemen were. Maybe I was reading too much into it.

Sorry about the bad 'quote' at the top. I can't figure out how to fix it.

Good for you for calling the police. I would have done the same exact thing. It's their job to check things out and make sure you are safe. I'm sure they were fine with it. I would have called even if DH was home. You just never know and 2:00am is a very odd hour to be at someone's front door. Hopefully that guy just had the wrong house and it was innocent. You did the right thing!

I would have called the police also. DH travels a lot for work (40% of the time). I have an alarm system and a dog. If someone rang my bell that late at night I would have called the police too. If I'm home during the normal course of the day, I always check before opening.
