You would arrive on a Sunday afternoon so you expect the traffic to not be horrible and since you have worked in NYC most of your life, LA traffic shouldn't be too bad. However, you depart on a Friday afternoon, so you will want to keep Friday's traffic in mind to head back to the Airport for a 3pm flight.
Last year I took 4 grandkids and DIL to SoCal for 6 days.
Two of the grand kids (DGS 17 DGD 14 at the time) have been with me many times to DLR. Once we ventured south to SanDiego for SeaWorld and the Zoo. Having grown up in SoCal in the 50's and 60's, I had no desire to go to Hollywood.
The DIL, 17 and 14 year old all wanted to go to Hollywood to see the sites.... Since Disney did away with 6 day tickets, on our last day, I loaded everyone up in the rental car and we drove to Hollywood before going to the airport for home.
It took me longer to find a parking spot than it did for those three to be done and ready to leave. They got to see sites they have seen on TV for years. I'm glad I did this for them. But they could see why I was never interested in taking them there. They agreed it looked way better on TV than in person.
I know when I was flying into LAX years ago, I could see the Hollywood sign from the plane. But I can't remember which side of the plane I was on.
Here is my suggestion for you........
If it is something you want to do, GO FOR IT!! You're on vacation for cry'n out loud.
On Sunday, get a rental car, go from the airport to see Hollywood. Disneyland is usually open late on Sunday. You may find you'll be to DLR early enough to spend a few hours in the parks. Depending on the time of year you go, this may be your only chance to see Fireworks and Fantasmic!
