What would you do ?

I travel without hubby and with kids all of the time (last year to london and paris with daughter). I would go to mexico Playa/Riviera Maya area without hubby in a heart beat..........The issues people read about are near the borders......think about it and do what you are comfortable with.

Memorial Day weekend, my family went to an adults only all inclusive in the Riviera Maya (stayed at the Excellence and HIGHLY recommend it for everyone- it was my parents, my sister, her boyfriend, and myself)

We did not leave the property and we booked transportation to and from the airport prior to our arrival (American Express like the cc company- were fantastic).

We NEVER felt uncomfortable except in the airport trying to find the American Express people (there were lots of people trying to get us to go with them but we stood our ground- they were simply pushy).

We would go back to the Riviera Maya (and the Excellence specifically) in a heartbeat.

Forevryoung: They call that the shark hall, the one you go through to get out the doors of the airport to get your pick/up. All you do is stare forward and in spanish say no thankyou with a smile and keep walking.......hubby did not listen to my directions and was stuck with one of these guys-me........I kept walking......

I send clients to all-inclusives in Mexico, specifically the Cancun/Riviera Maya areas, all the time. That area is very safe. I wouldn't hesitate to go.

That is where we go. My B & SIL have gone every year for over 20 years and my DH likes it so off we go this year..we went a few years ago also. We stayed at an Iberostar and got upgraded to the Presidential Suite which had an amazing ocean view and a hot tub on the balcony. Very nice, and very safe and secure. I live 65 miles from the border at Juarez and you couldn't pay me to go there, but so far the Riviera Maya is just fine and a beautiful place. I am far more worried about the flight to get there than being there. That said, I have no interest into going into the towns to shop (Playa Del Carmen is closest to where we stay) I can't stand the mercado type of shopping experience with people yelling at you to buy crap and then all the haggling. Ack..no thanks. I'll stay on the resort. Last time we went to Tulum (which was pretty amazing) and Xel Ha which is like a huge water park that feeds into the ocean, which was very nice also. I am not crazy, however, about being on the tour busses on the open road, so will see if I go to Xcaret or not. So, I say, go and enjoy the all inclusive resort!
