We are going to Disney World on December 14 and had our trip completely planned... or so I thought. :goodvibes We were to stay at the Polynesian for the first time and I was really excited about that. Well, my husband asked me to call Disney over the weekend and just see what a cheaper room would cost. We have 5 in our family so our options are limited. I called and got a great CM who went over different packages with me and I got a rate that is $1,700.00 less than we are currently spending if we go to the POR. Now if it was a few hundred dollars I wouldn't even consider switching but $1,700.00 is ALOT of money and I put it on hold but didn't cancel the Poly yet. I am so torn. When we originally started booking our vacation we didn't have the free dining and had the deluxe resort. Then we got the free dining which saved us about $1,600.00 and now if we switch to this resort then the cost of our vacation is almost exactly 1/2 of what it originally started off at. Would you switch to the POR to save that much money??:confused3

Only you could truly answer that question. Could you use the saving for something else that's really needed, Is money tight because of current economy. Myself the poly is my favorite resort, If it was in my budget I would stay there. But if funds were tight, I would stay at the moderate. Both resorts are great. $1600 could buy a lot of Christmas gifts. It's getting close. It's been a long time since I stayed at the poly. I am in the DVC and have only stayed at there resorts since joining.

That certainly is a great savings. My only question for you would be sleeping arrangements. I have not stayed at POR (though we have looked into it) so I do not know how large the trundle bed is--however, I have read on here that it is not very big. By looking at the ages of your kids, would your 10 y/o would be comfy on the trundle?

We are also a family of 5 and our girls were 12, 5, 3 on our last trip. We ended up going with POP and one king bed & 2 doubles in a connecting room. The cost was slightly more than one POR room and we had more space & 2 bathrooms. We couldn't afford a deluxe so that was our best choice.

Long story short--for my family, if we could afford Deluxe we'd go for it, however we like to spend our money on things other than the room so we'd go for the POR if that was the other choice. GOOD LUCK and have a great trip!!

We actually stayed at the POR last year and the trundle bed isn't huge by any means but its fine. I actually slept on it one night when my son fell asleep on the bed and I didnt' want to have to move him. It wasn't the most comfortable sleep I've ever had but also not the most uncomfortable either.

Quit thinking about it. Switch. The way the economy, country, and world is going, $1600 could be a nice little next egg.

After thinking about it. I have to agree with RNtheRN.
If you are questioning the decision in the first place, and you called disney to see if you could save money, you should switch.
Because otherwise it would not have even been thought of.

I totally agree. You still have the magic of the world, dining and now will have extra dollars for some of the unexpected. I'd switch in a heart beat if it were my decision.

We've stayed at POR and I thought it was very nice.

With what you are saving between the dinning plan and the POR you could almost take another trip:thumbsup2

We're switching. :thumbsup2 I keep thing that yeah, that is like another trip and I'd rather go twice and stay at the POR than once at the Poly!! Now if we're down there and we get a code for another trip I can say its practically paying for itself!! :cool1:

I didn't see this in time to weigh in, but seeing your decision, I think you made a great one. That is a ton of money to save (especially in this economy!)
We always stay values, and we have friends who can't figure out why we'd do that. The answer is simple, it allows us more trips. When we go to Disney it isn't a once in a lifetime trip, so we don't have to wear ourselves out trying to do it all, we can enjoy the moments and know there's always next time (plus we like the values!)
So, enjoy your trip and relax a bit knowing that there's always next time (cause you can afford it!)
Have fun!!!

Thank you. I kept thinking as much as I wanted to stay at the Poly we're usually out of our room by 8 am and not back again until after 10 pm. We always think we're gonna go back and relax at the hotel but all of a sudden the days half over and theres still a million things we wanted to do and we never seem to make it back. I gotta say there's nothing better than feeling like you just saved a bundle!

Somehow saving makes you enjoy it that much more. We have gotten deals the last several trips and that has made it that much more enjoyable. We got FREE DINING this trip (saved $1700 between us and my grandparents) and I am feeling sooooo happy about it I imagine I will feel so great when we got down there (may even finally spurge and buy myself a nice hoodie!)
Have a really great time...

We get in on the 10th of December but we'll try to leave some of the fun for you ...;) The 14th is my b-day. I'm only telling you this so you'll know why Disney is shooting all those fireworks off the night you get there.:lmao:

Have a great "budget minded" vacation.

Good thing you told me this or I would have thought those fireworks were meant as a welcome to Disney for us!!:woohoo:

Liked reading this discussion and suddenly feel bad that I didn't want to save $ and went ahead and did AKL instead of POR because I saved so much with FD code. Looking back on it, I think the prudent thing to do would be the Moderate over a Deluxe, but I'm betting all is booked now. Dnoyes-I will make sure to watch "your" fireworks the 14th. It's great that WDW could plan such a big party for you!http://www.wdwinfo.com/images/smilies/rotfl.gif

Then it's only fair that I share my :cake: with you ....lol

K, with all the money I saved switching hotels, I booked a day at Discovery Cove and we're all gonna swim with the dolphins. I'm so excited and not telling the kids until its almost time to go then I'm going to wrap up an underwater camera for each of them and put them under the Christmas tree, maybe Thanksgiving weekend. they will be beyond excited!:dance3:
