What would you do?

CustardTart - I was just wondering, given the somewhat.. er... flatulant nature of some of the posts, is your board name Cockney rhyming slang?

As in 'Bob produced a truly impressive Custard'. :rotfl2:

Well Kev I have been told I'm full of hot air and something of a gasbag - I don't know if that means anything... :rolleyes1

If anyone reclines the seat infront of us we usually politely ask them if they can put it back upright as DH is six foot six the seat digs right into his leg when it is reclined and he just tells them he has no room.( although he is a big softy would you argue with someone that big!!!) I also get a little chlostraphobic on the plane. Luckily we ususally get people who don't recline infront of us. Not going to be a problem this time as we have front row seats with loads of leg room :thumbsup2

Personally, I never recline a seat as I have been on the receiving end of a "reclined seat" many times. It is not a pleasant experience so I don't wish to put it on anyone else. However, when someone does recline in front of me I generally just stick my knees up into their back. Sound's tight, I know, but the ones who recline are usually just ignorant and don't care about anyone else's comfort.

:stir:

I don't recline (never sleep on flights anyway) but if the seat does it then obviously the airline intended it to recline so technically the people digging knees into the backs of seats or telling people not to recline are the ones being unfair ;)

This year on both flights we had the same people sitting in front of us. As soon as the seat belt sign went off, all seats were immediately reclined, the one in front of me just as I was completing the green forms. Because of the reclined seat and the lady's hairstyle I couldn't see the screen for the films etc either. At no point did she or her husband put the seats back up until asked to do so on landing.

The same thing happened on the way back, but this time I was ready and asked them politely but firmly if they could adjust their seats so we could eat in more comfort.

I never usually recline my seats, but behind us we had two young children, who were fairly well behaved and quiet, but did keep kicking the seats when getting out to the toilet etc (which happened quite frequently). However, when they fell asleep I did recline the seat a little as they were small enough to curl up in their own seats, so no feet were sticking out.

I don't mind if people recline if they ask, and are considerate enough to put the seats back up when eating etc.

This year we were particularly cross, because these people had extra legroom anyway and were practically laying down. They got plenty of sleep, but we didn't!!

We had the same problem when coming back from florida last year. Everyone was in the same position on a very cramped plane with very little leg room. The whole plane was complaining aout leg room but the family in front of us reclined thier chairs back fully practically trapping us in our seats! We asked them politley to put thier chairs back up as we could not move our legs, but they said " they had paid for the flight and as the seats reclined they were free to do this". Although they had a point we were astounded that people could be so selfish towards others. Needless to say the flight was unbearable even the air hostesses were agreeing that the leg room was terrible for a long haul flight - we will never use this company again and will now pay extra to ensure we get extra leg room. We thought this was a one off expereince but reading the posts it seems others have had the same problem, heres hoping it never happens to us again. It very nearly put me off going back to orlando but the desire to see mickey and shop has won and we will be ther ein two weeks hopefully without squashed legs! :cheer2:

This thread is getting ridiculous. Everyone has the right to recline and should not feel that they are being "ignorant" or "not caring about anyone else's comfort". The seats have the recline feature for a reason.

If you don't like people reclining and cramping "your" space then upgrade to get some more room or just deal with it.

Actually the seats are supposed to be upright for the meal services. The cabin crew ask you to do this and you are required by law to follow their instructions.
As for suggesting any affected person should simply "upgrade"; now who is being ridiculous?

not everyone can afford to upgrade. So should they have to be uncomfortable? What about kindness and consideration to fellow human beings is that too much too ask nowadays?

The post I quoted was not referring to the use of upright seats exclusively during meal services - I agree that during meal service the seats should be upright. However, complaining that you haven't got enough space because somebody else has reclined their seat is unjustified. You know (or can find out) the seat pitch before booking your seats. If you don't think you will have enough space for your own personal need, taking into account that seats recline, then you should seek to upgrade.

I understand that not everyone can afford to upgrade. However, if you are disatisfied with the pitch then you shouldn't complain about it when you knew it would be of that size before you even boarded the plane. If it's so important to someone to have more personal space, they could quite easily save up to pay for an upgrade, rather than expect people to not use the recline feature on the seats.

I had the same thing happen to me on a (full) flight back to UK a couple of years ago, but unfortunately the idiot kept 'letting off' continually all through the flight as well. I ended up standing in the aisle apart from when the stewardesses were going past (they kept smiling at me so I think they realised what was going on - couldn't miss the 'aroma'!!!!!!!) Sorry this is so disgusting, but why can't people behave!!!!! :furious: :rotfl:

Lets get back to the "letting off" scenario:rotfl2: :rotfl2: The funniest thread I've read since I've been "popping" on here to see what all you good Dissers are up to.
This business of "build up" while flying is horrendous - I spend the first full day in Disney playing revele - goodness knows what the neighbours think. I suppose you could subtly rid yourself during noisy sections on rides or even better - during the fireworks - or is that dangerous????

We were told the wrong pitch at the time of booking (have taken up with the company who blame another company wont use either again) but i would have thought that when everyone is in a bad situation together it would be nice to be considerate towards others.
obviously not everyone agrees with this and that is thier choice i was just given my personal opinion.
Sorry to upset anyone.

not sure if it is okay to type the name of the company?

I don't think you will breach any rules. Look back and you will fine every travel company and airline getting it in the ear for one thing or another. The reason I'm interested is because I am tall and have difficulty with the space provided.

Thanks.

I reclined my seat for about 30mins on our way out to Florida last month. DD18 told me I was being rude and "I should know better!" so this thread is interesting.
So in future I`m just going to recline my seat when the lights are dimmed on a night flight.
I noticed very few people reclined their seats BTW.

To recline, or not to recline? Those who accuse recliners of being inconsiderate are simply judging others' actions by their personal sense of right and wrong. There are plenty of things in life which I choose not to do myself, but I would still defend another person's absolute right to do the very same thing.

I always count my lucky stars if the person in front of me chooses not to recline, but I certainly don't feel agrieved if they do. I just adjust my screen and/or table and carry on with what I was doing. I'm the only person affected if I allow myself to get wound up about it, so why would I do that?

At one time, I never reclined in case I annoyed the person behind me. These days, I figure I shouldn't worry about the sensibilities of those who would get upset about something so trivial. If I'm not antagonising them by reclining my seat, I'm sure they'll find something else to dislike about me.

To those of you who advocate kneeing the backs of such heinous offenders - do you find your tactics work?

Live and let live, I say. I'll be in Disney soon! :thumbsup2

I fly quite a lot and have the attitude that if the seat in front of me reclines it does, it is made to do so and 9 times out of ten people are considerate, normally the cabin crew I have travelled with at meal times ask people to sit the seat up a bit.

But a few years ago on a Virgin flight my wife [who is a nervious flyer and was on some form of drug] had the passengers from hell who were putting the chair up and down non stop for about 2 hours, and jumping up and down they were aged about 18 and was trying to impress the girls next to them, unfortunately my wife stood up and I was sat accross the aisle I was like oh my god what is she was going to do, well to get his attention she thumped or should I say punched him on top of the head and then shouted "up or down make your mind up" it worked they sat bolt upright and still on the remainder of the flight, I did say to Val after the flight " the next time you fly you need to get different tablets from the doctor"

The only time I have ever had a real problem out of countless flights was on a flight to Orlando when the seat in front reclined at the earliest opportunity no problem I don't really care but when the meal came the cabin crew asked her to put it up just until the food finished as I was in the back row and unable to recline but she refused, I am ashamed to admit after the meal after I had to limbo dance up to get to the toilet, I twanged and shook her chair she shot forward like a crash test dummy, on my way back did the same again,I am sorry but it made me laugh and she then put her chair up a few inches.

We sound like the family from hell, honestly we are not by the way we are on the VA11.15am flight on 5th October
