What would you do!? Surprise party ?

What should I do?

  • Say my brother is here and wants to wish her well.

  • Say my MOM is here to wish her well and doesn't want to come in to the actual office.

  • Say that there is something really weird/silly in the lobby she MUST see.

  • Something else? (please explain)

Hi all,

I need a little help here. Today at work we are having a surprise shower for a good friend of mine (who also works here and is leaving to get married on St. Thomas on Wednesday!). I have been given the role of getting her to the party which will be held in a large conference room on the other side of our building; not somewhere she or I would normally go unless we had a scheduled meeting there. To make it even harder, I have to get her there around 12, which is not her usual lunchtime. Her (and my) usual lunchtime is 1. She answers phones in a customer service dept and I fear getting her away will be hard because she will think she needs to cover the phones. (does that makes sense?).

My first thought was to say my younger brother had stopped by for a visit to wish her well before she leaves. But my boyfriend (who also works here) made a really good point, if my brother were to come in and do this, why would he not just come into the building? (the conference room is by our front desk on the other side of our security doors). So why would my brother just stay out there and not be buzzed in like he has numerous times before.

Then I thought maybe I could say my mother came by to wish her well. My mother has never been in this office, and my exH works here as well and since everyone in my family loathes him for the terrible things he did to me, I could maybe say that she doesn't want to come in on the off chance she sees him.

But that seems like a rather morbid way to start off a bridal shower.

Chris, my boyfriend suggested I just do something so silly and goofy and "me" that she'd never even question it, like act all silly and walk up to her and say "Oh my god...you have to come out in the lobby and poke your head in the conference room and check out this guys Mullet (silly hairdo for anyone who doesn't know) ! Wow he looks like he got it in 1985!" . Because that is something that , I'm almost embarrassed to say, would amuse us and something she'd never suspect.

The problem is because at 12, the people who take lunch at 1 are very sternly reminded on normal days that they must stay on the phones to cover at all times. Of course, her bosses are putting me up to this. But she doesn't know it!

So I could come up to her and say, "Wow you have to check out this guys silly toupee!" , and she could come back with, "I really can't. I have to cover".

What to do, what to do?

Any other suggestions ? Or which one of these would you do?

Will someone else be covering the phones during that time anyway? If so could you plan to have them nearby when you say that to your friend and just throw out..."hey could you watch the phones for a minute?". And of coure have that person know whats going on so they say "sure, but hurry back I have to....whatever" .
Good luck! I hope it works out for you. Let us know what happens.

There will be about 6 people covering during that time. I might try this. :) I will let you know!

Can't a boss just call from the conference room and say "can you come down to the conference room for a minute?"

No one really gets called to conference rooms. They used to do that , but they only did it for surprise parties so everyone caught on

I just found out her lunch time has been switched to 12. So Now I think I might just try and get her out to go shopping and somehow stop at that room.
