What would you do if you won the lottery?

I read this at work today, and couldn't wait to get home to respond!!

I'm assuming I won a boatload of money:

I would quit my job. I'd burn every bridge walking out of there too. I'd be sure to tell them how unethical they are, that they are chasing customers away left and right, and that despite what they say, our "friends across the pond" are OUTSOURCED and taking jobs from Americans. ( 60 more people are being laid off by August)

Ahem. It was a bad day at work.

Then I would call a financial planner. Wouldn't tell a soul till I had everything in order.

I'd put enough in a trust fund for my daughter, with stipulations. She would have to complete college, and be drug free ( which she better be anyway ) and volunteer with charities. Gotta keep her humble.

I'd buy a new SUV with all the bells and whistles, fix my house up and rent it out, and buy a kick-butt beach house. In fact, I know which one I would buy!

I'd set my Mom, Step-father and Father up very nicely but they would have stipulations to not waste any money on my dead beat brother. He has to work-steadily, as does his wife. They've almost caused financial ruin to all three of them by their mooching ways. I would pay for my niece and nephews to go to school, but they would have to keep up with their grades.

I'd donate to various charities, and set up some type of farm for older horses so they could just meander around a pasture well into their golden years. I would build a beautiful house and get another Newf. Maybe 2 more!

I would set up some type of foundation for foster children. It makes me very sad to know that at 18 they are pushed out of the system, and some don't make it very far.

I'd establish something for abused children as well. There was a little boy here, probably about 10-15 years ago named Brian. His father's girlfriend abused him, and he died from alcohol poisioning after she made him drink mouthwash. The article in the paper said a nurse held him the night he died, and it was probably the first time anyone had done that. It still breaks my heart.

There's also a dentist in I beleive the Appalachian Mountains that works out of a trailer and runs totally on donations, and barely. I'd fund that-and double his yearly budget. There has to be a way to create jobs in that area as well.

Am I out of money yet??

Give a huge chunk to St. Jude Children's Hospital..

Help out family members and friends that are in need..

"Gift" certain amounts to certain people..

Make sure I had enough invested/set aside to cover whatever I might need (financially/medically) for whatever time I have left to live..

I can't see myself going off on any wild spending sprees.. I prefer to live a pretty simple lifestyle..

I tend to be a "giver".. Makes me happy to make others happy..:goodvibes

I'd pay off our house and cars. (We love this house too much to sell it just yet. But we WOULD sell DH's car and buy him a Silverado with all the bells and whistles!)

I'd buy a house in Florida on an Intercoastal Waterway.

Take DH to Ireland, visit a friend in the UK, and see London.... maybe Paris, and for SURE Rome.

Go to Hawaii... take my parents.

We would probably travel extensively starting with a huge magical gathering for all of our family at WDW. We would be fine not even owning a home for a while, we'd sell the house we have and travel, visiting different countries. We'd set aside retirement and education money of course. If we got the urge to settle within a year or two we'd have a home built to specifications in a warm climate and look for some kind of meaningful work to do as a family. Thanks for asking - that was fun! :cloud9:

I'd tackle all the house projects that we're doing one at a time now and get started on really restoring the exterior of our old Victorian. We'd buy newer models of our cars because they're both getting old, and maybe a newer model of our boat as well. I'd probably build a new gaming computer and hand this one down to the kids, and we'd take a couple of fun trips.

Beyond that it would all be savings and charity. I'd want to pay off my BIL's and SIL's mortgages, set up college funds for my nieces and nephews, buy my brother a home and my mother a car. I'd love to set up a scholarship-type fund through our school district for the express purpose of paying pay-for-play fees on behalf of students from low-income homes, and I'd make sure our school garden program had funding regardless of district or county budget cuts. The rest would sit in the bank for "just in case", or maybe go into starting up a small shop in our little town.

After paying off the house and giving some to select family and friends I would travel. How often would depend on the size of the lottery winnings.

A whole lot of you are saying you would travel, so I would just like to know where? Why? How?

Where would you go, where would you stay? How would you get there? What would you do once there?

I would become a full time missionary for girls in the Thailand sex trade. I would love to do that but it takes a lot of sponsorship and money! So I would love to be able to fund that.

I would pay off my schooling debts and save enough to go back for my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology.

I would buy my dad a boat to take out on the lake, his favourite place in the world.

The rest I would save and use to help out friends and family.

So much fun to dream!:thumbsup2

My favorite so far...

"Pay off all my debt."

Really? You would do that if you won the lottery? You wouldn't just stay in debt? LOL.

Nothing like stating the obvious. :confused3

I was thinking the same thing and was just about to post something to that effect. I don't usually buy a ticket unless the jackpot gets big (okay, I'm selfish ;) )so if I won it, debt isn't the first thing I'd think about. I'll be able to cover my mortgage, car loan and home equity with no problem. first thing I'd do is find a good tax attorney to help me lay out a plan. I read a great article in Fortune by a previous lottery winner on how he handled his winnings. Google "Brad Duke" and "Taking home the jackpot". This guy knew what he was doing.

Wait, I found the link:

First thing: Get out of town for a long weekend and change my phone numbers and Facebook page.

Then I'd pay off things, fund the kid's college savings and our retirements, and then create a program in the inner cities to give kids swimming lessons. I'm always amazed by the amount of drownings I read because a teenager went into the water not knowing how to swim.

Well stating the obvious I think most of us state it as winning the lottery is a dream and the debt can cause nightmares, loss of sleep, and a lot of stress.

Even seeing pay off all the debt in writing makes it seem more real you know?

I would buy one of those new houses that Disney is building down in Disney World. While that house is getting built, I would start a world tour and go visit Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, South America, and hey why not, toss in North America.
I would then move into my lovely new home in Disney World, get season passes, and explore every inch of Disney World.
After that, who knows, I'm sure I could come up with something though.
