Here's my dilema... We (Santa) bought DD7 a 90CC Artic Cat 4-wheeler for christmas. Originally the plan had been to get a 50cc which would have fit through the slider off the deck. well, this one wont. so my choices are as follows.

1- take tires off, bring in, put tires back on, take tires off bring out, put tires back on. DH says he canput only 2 lug nuts on each tire when he brings it in, to quicken the removal instal after.

2- wrap safety video- let DD unwrap- then wrap DVD game that comes with it- let her unwrap- the lastly let her unwrap the key...she wont know until the key...

the drawbacks to 2- I want to video her walking down the hallway, turning into the living room and seeing the quad...

Should we go through the hassle of removing the tires (about 10 minutes for DH to do..complete) for the magic of SANTA...

your opinions?

take it back and get a gift certific

Here's an idea.. tie a ribbon to the tree and wind it through and around the house, wherever, until it reaches the 4-wheeler in the garage (or wherever you can keep it). This way she gets a surprise and, you can video the 'hunt' for the present. It won't be at the tree tho, obviously. Good Luck!

<font color=navy>I wouldn't take the wheels off. I would probably wrap the key in a box so she doesn't realize it's a key, then when she unwraps the key have it attached to a note telling her where her present is and follow her with the video camera.

I like follow the ribbon idea too. I know there are some big ribbons out there to put on it. My car had several when it was given to me on Christmas.
It was the same thing, an antenna topper, the lead crystal raindrop, then the key. :teeth:

I think I'm going to go down to the appliance store and see if I can get a box from a stove or dryer....I'll wrap the key in 3-4 boxes, and put it in the BIG box...that box would be about the size of the quad if it was laying on its side....

I only hope she doesnt get upset if she walks out and doesnt see it under the tree...she's asked Santa for one since she was 5, and DH and I told her not till she was 8...well, she's 7, but we did take her about 2 months ago to check her size on the different machines etc..

I'm glad that DD's are not old enough to figure out whose presents cost more than the other...DD6 is getting more presents, however no way does it add up to the quad. Though, next year when DD6 gets a dirtbike, it will even out.

The ribbon idea is GREAT....think I'll do that, tie it to her kitchen chair, and have the quad on the back deck..it can go out the door to the quad.

COOL! thanks everyone!

We bought DS a 350cc four wheeler two years ago for Christmas. We had NO intention of bringing into the house. We hid it in a neighbors garage. We took the key and taped it to a Minnie Mouse phone that was DDs. We put the phone in a cell phone box and then wrapped it up. When he unwrapped the present the look on his face was priceless. He was not too thrilled to get a cellphone of the brand he didn't like. He continued to open the box only to see a pink cellphone. He looked like this was his worse Christmas he could ever have! He then turned the phone around and saw the key taped to it. He let out a whoop and started hopping up and down when he saw it was a 4 wheeler key. We then called the neighbor who opened his garage door and DS ran across the street and brought it back, giant red bow and all!

Well, right now the quad is at the Highway Dept's garage (town employee perk I guess :D ) Our plan is to leave DD's at my mom's xmas eve, with the excuse we need to bring DH's truck home and get my car for the trunk space for gifts, stop at the garage, and pick up the quad, park the truck on the side of the house, and then go get the DD's with the car...later that night, unload it and bring it I guess up on the deck...The only neighbor round here with a garage with room is 87 years old, I'm not sure if she will enjoy a 7am phone call!...

DH says we should just put her helmet under the tree, unwrapped, she'll know EXACTLY what it's for....oh the joys of playing SANTA!

Now I've gotta decide where in the garage this quads going to go...I think DH was right when he said we need a garage just for toys...geez

We have a 3 car garage that is oversized to boot and we can only fit DH's H-2 and my Odyssey in itl The other section is filled with a quad and a weight bench along with various other toys ride ons!

in our family there is always somone who gets a "string" gift, the one that is too large to wrap. Its fun...just tie a string (or a ribbon if you have one that long) to the gift and hand the person the other end and off they go looking for it.

DH is getting a Hummer for Christmas! I haven't decided just exactly how I'm going to present it to him yet, but I'm sure he'll be surprised!;)

Do the doors to your deck have heavy drapes or blinds? I like the idea of opening presents, Like the video, the helmet, the key... or the BIG box, then just pull back the blinds or drapes! VOILA! It could be set up out there, all decorated with a giant bow and ribbons... If you do not have snow, then how about setting it up out there on fake snow, sheets of quilt batting all layed out like snow-drifts, or something like that. It would be like a nice display in a showroom window.

Then it will be easy to capture her reaction! More photogenic, and less time consuming than following a ribbon to the garage???

Sounds like your DD will be just THRILLED!!! :D

I'd take it back and by something safer and more age appropriate...

MICKEY88 ......I'd take it back and by something safer and more age appropriate...

Do me a favor Mickey88, read the OP, if you can't help with the dilema- don't offer your comments. I did not ASK you if it was "Safe".....or age appropriate...

DH got his first Dirtbike at 5 years old, I got my first 3-wheeler when I was 6...I've NEVER crashed... DH has...but DH admits it was his own stupidity.

My neices and nephews/BIL/SIL etc.. all have quads. DD will NOT be out riding her quad alone, DD also will take and pass the safety course offered from Artic Cat....

Now, maybe I should go get her the flu shot, wrap her in bubble wrap, cancel the trip to Disney, remove the tree due to a fire hazard, take that piece of candy from her, so she doesnt choke. I wonder if I can get her one of those bubbles to live in.

Geez, you'd think I don't know anything about safey. Her 90 is governed right now at 8 mph....it has a tether strap/kill switch...she has a $200.00 helmet to go with it, along with a chest protector, pants with pads, and riding boots. Oh- dont forget the goggles.

Oh- I gotta go get her, she's outside in the snow, I better go get her, cause climbing up on the play house and jumping off into the snow is NOT age appropriate, nor is it very safe...

BAD MOMMY....

I did read the OP. the title asks.what would you do.......I never said you didn't know anything about safety

once you calm down have a wondeful holiday season..
sorry my comment spun you so easily..

having just watched my best friend nearly lose his wife after a quad crushed her chest and face, then reading literally hundreds of news articles online about the high accident rates with quads, I just stated what I'd do...I didn't get nasty, nor did I quote statisitics which I could have,,did you know that if the dealer sold you the 90cc atv knowing it was to be used by a 7 year old, they can lose their license..
