I added two beautiful pies to my grocery cart for a family dinner on Saturday. This is what the grocery bagger did to them. The apple caramel wasn’t as messed up as the strawberry rhubarb was. She bagged the two pies together, then rather than laying them flat in the cart she put them in vertically. I was still unloading the cart so didn’t notice, and when I put the bags in my car I didn’t look at the pies, but did lay them flat so the damage was done as I pushed the cart through the parking lot to my car. I discovered what had been done when I was home putting everything away. We still ate the pies , but part of me wants to go to customer service and complain. The other part of me wants to let it go since the appearance didn’t affect the taste. What would you do?7BF353F3-AF91-465B-BDA7-A316B03D2E67.jpegC4EF6169-CC04-410B-B975-438669E59272.jpeg

Well unfortunately you've eaten them so you can't take them back. But I'd probably complain that they were broken into pieces.

I don't do order and pick up. But if I do, note to self, check fragile things like pies.

My pet peeve with baggers. Pork and chicken bagged with beef. I have to stop them from doing it all the time. Or worse, bagged with lunch meat....

LOL PSA. don't watch any of those restaurant rescue shows. You'll never want to eat out again!!!!

Well since you ate them (even part of them) to me nullifies your reason for wanting to take them back

I would show pictures of the broken pies to the manager so that the packers can be retrained or at least alert to the issue of not packing it properly.

And if this happened to me I’d “save” the pie by covering it w/ whipped cream. Yeah, Cool or Dream Whip stuff would be easier but I don’t eat either one.

Thinking about this, I am trying to think the last time I was in a store that still had baggers. The checker rings everything up then bags it. Although we usually start bagging as items are scanned.

If I got home and noticed they were bagged vertically, I’d probably go back immediately and let them know, and ask to exchange them.

But at this point,(since they’ve been eaten) I’d let it go.
It’s a 40-minute round trip drive to go back to the store, so that’s why I took pictures to show them if I decided to complain the next time I was there.
If it’s a big deal to you which sounds like it is I would take them back.

Also a side note this is why I do self check out or at least bag it myself.

You have people that either don't care or don't understand how items should be bagged.
The store recently changed their bagging system. They had the carousel with bags, like Walmart. The cashier bagged the groceries and the customer would take the bags and put them in the cart. I never would have laid the pies vertically. But they omitted the carousel and there is a short moving belt that the cashier puts each item on and it goes back to the person bagging. If the customer is still unloading the groceries they don’t pay attention to how things are bagged. Makes no sense to me why they went to this system.

I didn’t want to take them back, that’s why I took pictures. If only to show a manager so maybe they can talk to the baggers so it doesn’t happen to someone else.

But they probably would just prefer everyone goes to the self checkouts instead of through the checkout. Had I done that, my pies would have been fine😁. I don’t mind self check out if I just have a few items, but not when I have a cart full.

Since you ate them, it's a little late to complain. If I am buying anything that I know could be crushed or damaged at the grocery store (eggs, bread, baked goods), I always separate them from the rest of my stuff when I check out and I watch the bagger (if there is one) to make sure they are put in my bags properly and don't get smooshed. Consider it a lesson learned.

The law changes here in California January first regarding self check. It will be interesting to see how things change. They have to have an employee there for every two self checks. And you can't use a self check if you have more than 15 items. My local chain grocery store, in the mornings when I shop currently has one employee who is running a check stand, AND overseeing four self checks. They will need to add two employees now to stay legal.

I was just coming to say this. I finally got tired of the baggers putting stuff in so that things got ruined. I go to the self checkout even if I have 50 items and I do a darn good job of it.

I'd be furious over this. But since you ate them at this point, I'd let it go.

Anything “fragile” always gets held back until last and then I tell the checkout person that I’ll place it in the trolley myself - eggs, cakes, even loaves of bread. That way I can ensure they remain intact. IMO you’ve eaten and therefore accepted the damage so there is no further action necessary.

Sorry about your pies, @MIGrandma. I'm glad they still tasted OK!

I think that's exactly what you should do! - I feel like baggers don't get proper training anymore.

My pet peeve is when I purposely lay my insulated bags on the belt, then the cold items I want in them, then my other bags, then the non-perishables*... and they still mix all the stuff together in whatever bag.

(* I do this because I know I will only get to put the cold stuff away right when I get home, and the pantry stuff won't get done until later. - It's so much easier if it's already separated.)

Agree, once you accept them (by eating them), you can't ask for anything back. You can mention it but it's just as well to let it go.

I don't get the lack of common sense for bagging. My takeout from Buffalo Wild Wings once had a flatbread - it was packed vertically..... who packs a COOKED pizza vertically? I mentioned it to them while I fixed it, and they offered to remake it but I told them just to retrain whoever packs. Still tasted fine, but man what stupidity.

As Judge Judy would say......."you ate the steak instead of sending it back"
Of course if I EVER brought store bought pies into my house, I would be greeted with divorce papers.
