We store towels under the bathroom sink in our upstairs bathroom. In the past week we've had 3 towels fall apart, and 2 sponges disintegrate. When the towels were shaken out, they tore near where they were being held. These towels were older, but only maybe 10 years old. My mom still has perfectly usable (if this) 35 year old towels. It doesn't look like anything spilled under there, and there isn't any kind of chemical smell. We do store bathroom cleaners under the sink, too. Ideas?

I would say your chemicals. My first thought specifically was bleach fumes. I know that in my grandma's pool house (small storage area) that items have disintigrated in the past quicker than expected and we think a big part of it are the pool supply fumes.
