What will happen in 2042?

We just bought a small resale at HH. We are trying to decide on where to buy 'at Disney', and we keep coming back to the fact that we are young so SSR or AKV make more sense although we also really like some of the older resorts.
Has anyone gotten any insight from guides or others in the know about what will happen in 2042? Will Disney give a discount to members who want to buy back in when their contracts expire? Do you think they'll let you extend your contracts (for a cost obviously) for however many years?

I know this is all stipulation, but I was wondering what people thought.

No one really knows, but I've seen a lot of speculation. You should probably just assume that if you only own at a resort that ends in 2042, that your participation in DVC would end. That's the worst case scenario.

I'm not saying that is what is going to happen. That's just what the legal documents we all signed says the only thing that Disney has promised.

Not even Disney knows.

The big appeal to Disney is getting folks to make a large up-front investment, and then Disney is guaranteed the return business at the theme parks for years to come. In my opinion, offering short term extensions defeats the purpose of DVC. Many of those who would be eligible for the extensions would be descendants of the original purchaser, and Disney would much rather lock those folks in for another 50 years.

Personally I think they'll make a resort-by-resort decision on what to do. Some may be bulldozed in favor of a new theme. Those that are holding up better may be refurbished and sold for another 50 years.

IMO, your best route for extending beyond 2042 will be buying a resale at SSR, AKV or some other subsequent resort. When SSR only has 12 years remaining and AKV 15 years, resale pricing will be reflective of the short contract durations.

Not this thread again. We just had one of these a few weeks ago. To the OP, Do a search and I'm sure a few will pop up. :thumbsup2

Sorry for the duplicate post. I'm on this board daily and missed that one. I'll go search now. Sorry.

1) I would not worry about it.
2) The Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012.
3) Thus, we won't be here to ponder the problem.
4) Of course, if they are wrong, then we need to really consider the options.

NOTE: I am going to take the the WDW/DVC decisions at face-value. I bought for a specific period of time, so anything extra is a bonus. Right now, I am more worried about Hillary getting into the White House than my DVC contracts.

I'l be 86
wife will be 83
12 years left on SSR contract
15 years left on AKL contract
at that point does it really matter

Do you have points at all the resorts you show in your signature, if so what is your "home" resort?

Please don't feel bad or apologize for asking this question again.

It is a valid question that interests many folks (including folks that are not on this board religiously and probably did not read a similar thread weeks (even months or days) ago nor have mastered the art of refining the searchs on the DIS--which can be quite arduous if one does not know how to use the advanced search option and narrow it down to only the DVC threads).

As proof to how interested folks can be in this topic, you have over 600 people who have viewed this thread to see what comments may have been made. So do not be discouraged from posting your questions.

Finally, to address the question you asked, I'm hoping that Disney offers to extend the contracts at that time (whether it's me extending it or my heirs). I would think it would be in Disney's best interest (monetarily) to do so.

A better question would be what does he have against OKW?

:lmao:

I would assume that the resorts will cease to exist as far as the owners are concerned. I think is exceedingly unlikely that the contracts will be extended or that any other options will be given other than Disney takes over.

So, Dean, does this mean that you think that the resorts will be razed, or that they will be converted into some sort of Disney hotels/resort?

Obviously no one knows for certain. I really doubt it will matter to the current members, not because of age not because they will cease to be resorts . I actually suspect it will vary on a case by case basis. I do not belief extensions will be offered nor the resorts will be resold as time shares in their current state. Only time will tell for certain and we will have plenty of other opportunities to have this discussion.

While I believe that the resorts could easily last another 50 years, I doubt they are easily sold in a competitive market. Certainly there is a likelihood of unexpected major expenditures to maintain older properties. And I suspect buyers are looking for a "new" resort if they are going to own for sometime.

I doubt Disney would decide until much closer to the contract end date. Much will depend on how the market evolves, the then current WDW master development plan and whether the DVC is stand alone or resort paired.

It is interesting that DVD is now staggering contract end dates to avoid the large single date turnover of inventory. That is going to introduce some challenges for them -- maybe they will need to create a DVC redeployment team dedicated to the issue.

I'll be 97. I will let my great grand children worry about it!

Frankly, I'll use my DVC membership as much as I and my children can as long as we are able.

Yep again... However, searches with this search engine are frustrating to say the least. I can't find my own posts.

To the OP.... Don't count on DVC keeping 50 year old resorts in business.
