What was the thread about using your AP for 1 adult w/FTP?

I remeber reading here or on Mousesavers about leaving the UPH part of FTP off for 1 adult if they have an AP...I must have misunderstood I think, but what if you have someone in the party who is not staying the whole 7 nights and they have an AP? This question was posted to me and I was stumped.

As I understood the recommendation, you would leave the 1 adult off of the reservation entirely. So, the package would reflect only the people in the party who needed the UMPs.

Then, upon arrival, you would add the name of the other adult to the room, leaving off the tickets, so he/she could have a key to the room.

Will this actually work? Can you add just the name to the room at check-in and not get UPHs? We have a friend going in August with the FTP and are considering going with her, but we have APs so getting the FTP for us all would be a waste.
