What was The Gulf Coast Room?

Reading older postings I came acros this restaurant at the Contemporary, located on the second or third floor. I used to visit the CR a lot as a kid but I don't ever seeing it. I know it was quite fancy, and up until V & A's opened it was the only restaurant, along with the Empress Room, that required men to wear jackets.

Was it located on the convention floor? Or on the third floor? What was the cuisine? And why did it close?

I'm not certain if I remember this correctly, but it seems to me it was located where California Grille is now. I think I remember seeing a Broadway style show there in the 80's. Now I'm curious, too! Maybe someone with a better memory can let us know for sure.

The California Grill replaced the Top of the World restaurant which had great breakfast and Sunday brunch buffets as well as lunch although I don't think we ever did the lunch buffet. At night, a dinner show called Broadway on Top was offered.

We never dined at the Golf Coast Room but my guess is that is was on the second floor.

Gulf Coast Room: One of the select Walt Disney World restaurants that required jackets for men (Top of the World also required them). It closed on May 28, 1988.

It also says that the restaurant offers "Elegant French service dining. 2nd floor - The Towers, 6:30 - 11:00 p.m. Reservations necessary: coats for gentleman, please."

Thanks! I found that page yesterday too (the pictures of the old Contemporary Resort decor were horrifying!). Now I just need testimonials from former guests to find out what exactly was on the menu.
