I don't post here alot but after our not so magical adventure yesterday I had felt I had to vent. Any one find out what the fire was at VB on Sunday? It was between 8am-9am and we were getting ready to check out and drive to OKW for the rest of the week when the fire alarms went off. Next thing we know is there's a CM yelling thru the Inn we need to evacuate. My DW getting in the shower and my DD is now scared and upset (as I'm typing this my DD 7 is in the shower at OKW and the dryer buzzer went off she started yelling, thought is was a fire alarm). So we trek down the stairs from the forth floor along with everybody else and by this time you can smell something burning. Smelled like one of the cooks burnt some toast!! Fire dept came and in about five minutes gave the all clear. The whole Inn smelled and I believe they did the right thing by evacuating but just wondering what it was?

On a side note we get to OKW and can't get in our room till 4pm then when we do it smelled sooo bad I could't stand it. I'm not one to normally complain about minor things but this stunk bad, musty smelling. So we went back to the front desk and they did switch our 1BR with another (furthest building away), but the thing that concerned me is at the same time we were complaining about the smell there were two other people also complaining about the smell. We own at SSR and are very happy there but want to try some other resorts but OKW yesterday made me wish I was at SSR. Today's starting out better I guess we will give OKW another chance.

This was my 40th Birthday also:scared1:, hope it really ain't going to be one of those years!!

It seems to me that OKW always has a musty smell. We notice it on every stay there. After a couple of hours, you get use to it. :goodvibes

I bet someone burnt some toast in their kitchen and it set off the fire alarms. We lived in a high rise condo and it happened all the time. But like you we thought it was better to be safe than sorry.

We were at Vero Beach yesterday and knew nothing of the Fire alarms going off ?? Where you staying in the Main building ?? We were in building 15 and never heard the alarms - fire trucks or anything - we actually were at the store at 9:15am and nobody said anything and I didnt smell a thing ?? I bought a big bottle of water and headed to the pool. :confused3

We checked out of Vero this morning and got to OKW at 11am and our room was ready - sorry - not trying to rub it in but we're here now with perfect weather and couldnt of asked for a better room.

Hope the rest of your stay gets better - here is some pixie dust to make you feel better....pixiedust:

Sorry..I disagree! I have been dvc member at OKW since 1994 and have visited at least yearly, if not twice a year and have NEVER had a musty smell in any villa in any area. Don't think you should make that kind of a blanket statement..really.

We're at VB also. One of the firemen told me to watch my poptarts for the rest of the stay! I asked if that's what happened and he said someone burnt a poptart.

Musty smell at OKW???? I've stayed there more than 25 times, and I've never had a musty smell.

Ditto! We've been OKW members since 1997 and have never smelled a musty odor in any of our villas. We've had villas at other properties (twice) that had an odd odor because the carpet was recently shampooed. Could that have been it?

I'm an SSR owner and I stay at OKW a lot to keep my vacation habits and point usage in budget. I have stayed in OKW studios four times in the past 3 years. I never, ever had a musty smell. OKW & SSR get my vote for the best places to stay at the World.

I'm very sorry you had to suffer the initial dissappointment of getting a room that did. But I'm glad they did switch you rooms. Have a great time.

OH! and Happy Birthday!! 40's are not so bad.

Sorry you had a stinky room, someone on another thread was complaining of a horrible smell in their room at AKV?:confused3
Glad you got switched to a new room, and I hope you have a great vacation and a GREAT 40th Birthday!:cheer2:

On a previous visit we check in and were assigned a room that had a overpowering "musty/mildew" odor. We went directly back to checkin and requested a different room. This trip I did online check-in and text room ready notification so we did not get to room till much later in the day the usual. Upon entering room we all commented on the strong "musty/mildew" smell. Our quests suggested we purchase scented candles to mask the smell. I went to front desk and requested a different room but was told that none were available as the resort was full. Same answer for the next day. I was asked if I wanted to move to a different resort. Is it unreasonable to expect a room that is as clean and inviting as the check in area? We have only experienced this at OKW never at our home resorts, BCV or VWL. It's disappointing because we really like OKW but I may accept the offer to change resorts because the smell is very offensive and unacceptable.

I have to start by saying we've stayed in worse rooms in our travels with out saying a word. But with the amout of $ we spend at WDW we expect to have nice rooms that don't smell. We don't expect perfect by any means and understand some rooms have more wear and tear than others. Well with that said! All worked out in the end once we got settled in our new room that didn't stink and thanks to the magical customer service we received from a few special cast members. A couple days after our not so magical first day at OKW we received phone calls from 2 seperate Customer Service Managers making sure the rest of our stay was going ok. Then one of the Mousekeeping Managers called and left a message on my cell that she was in our room with another member of the mousekeeping staff and they did a full cleaning for us and left a little critter behind for our DD7. When we got back to our room we had 10 Mickey Head Balloons, 15 towel animals, a box of chocolate's and a set of small stuffed Mickey and Minnie mouse. My DD7, DW and myself could'nt believe it. It was so cool and made the end of our trip much better than the start. I can not say enough good about some of the CM's at OKW and we went back to the HH on our last day to personally thank them for what they did. I have a feeling what may happen with these rooms in OKW is if there is no one in them for a few days and they have these motion thermostats in them the A/C don't kick on at all and that could be why some smell more than others. They need dehumidifiers in them to help get rid of the mositure in the rooms.
All in All we had a good trip thanks to a few people that actually seemed to care and take pride in what they do.
Thanks!!

Back to the original subject of the thread...

Would you believe that the fire alarms went off around 9:00 on Sunday 10/25 too (we were in bldg 15)? I wonder if it's someone's job to burn something Sunday mornings to set the alarms off?

I was in the shower and DW and DD were in the hot tub when the alarms sounded. DW called the front desk and they said they knew about it - they were trying to get the alarm to shut off and everything was okay. A couple minutes later housekeeping is knocking on all of the doors telling people to evacuate across the street. I told the person what the front desk had said, and she said okay - but continued to knock on doors (as she was told to do). I walked outside and smelled a faint burning smell, but didn't see any smoke or firemen or hear any fire sirens.
