What vacation $$ amount makes you squirm?

Every time we spend more then our mortgage payment :crazy2:
which is less then 1k

my brain goes why you could have done x and x with that money. whine whine.. the fun voices in my head say shut up....:rotfl2:

yep I need help;)

No, you don't need help. You are practical :) I totally understand

I want you guys' paychecks! $2000 for us. That's a week at the beach, hotel, gas, and food. We don't do anything while there. We are not shoppers, just browsers. We spend all day on the beach and all evening on the beach. Myrtle Beach is our place and dining is dang cheap there. Didn't eat for more then $40 for the 4 of us all week, most being around $30. I eat shrimp dinners just about every night.

Yes and Yes. I was reading some of these posts and was in :scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1: . 12K for a vacation is a year of house payments for a lot of people in America. Over 2000 is my cringe point, too.

$3000 is my squirm point. But we have done two $5000 vaca's -those were our WDW/Cruise trips. Normally we around $2000-$2500.

Currently we are planning Hawaii with a partial stay at Aulani in March for $4000 but we've got $800 worth of Disney rewards visa points and airfare miles to take care of one airfare plus $1000 saved in our vacation jar so that brings the total down by quite a bit of actual $ to take from our savings account. So with all of our "saved" rewards and money jar money I feel more comfortable with amount of cash we need to pay for this trip.

We try to stay around $2500 range unless we go on a 7 day cruise.

$12k would be 22+ mortgage payments for me :lmao:

I am going to Florida for two weeks with my best friend in August/September.. The total cost is £1049 for flights from UK to Orlando and back again, transfers to and from airport and 2 weeks stay at a hotel on International Drive then about £300-400 for 2 week hopper passes for Disney and Universal and then about £2000 spending money.. That is in British prices which according to an online converter, is about 5500 American Dollars. That is PER PERSON.

Sounds really expensive and it's a huge amount of money, but it's not like a holiday that we would do regularly and we booked in May 2013 so we will have been saving our hard earned money for 15 months by the time the holiday comes

12,000 a year is our house payments which is why we are able to enjoy other things in life. We chose not to be house poor. We choose not to drive two brand new vehicles anymore. We choose living life and vacations are part of that for us. People spend money in different ways. It is okay.

All of our big vacations have been around $3000-$3500, so I don't want to cross $4000. It helps now that we should be able to fly for free most of the time with RR points- DH charges a lot for business on the SW card. Without that, our SoCal trip last year and our WDW trip this year probably would have passed $4000.

:thumbsup2 Everyone has different incomes and a different amount they can spend on vacations. That's okay. I doubt many people on the budget board are missing mortgage payments to go on vacation. ;)

$2500 is normal average for everything for our vacations. We are really splurging for our Disney Trip in June. Everything (FOr 3 adults, 3 children :hotel, dining plan, tickets, gas for the drive, dog boarding, extras) is about $5500. We are doing a few extra things we normally wouldnt do and also invited my sister down and are paying for everything for her besides her gas to get there.

You would certainly hope not. :)

The $12k, I'm guessing is me.
This is the most we've ever spent-and probably will ever spend on a vacation.
It's for 21 nights,and we're super excited.

My family would have the same :scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::eek::eek::headache::headache::sick::sick::sick::sick: reaction, but I would never share with them, and its none of their business.

Btw-our mortgage payments are less than our vacation spendage, and we've budgeted accordingly for our previous trips and our forthcoming one.

It really depends on where the vacation is. We did San Diego last summer for about $1200...free flights thanks to the SW CC. I would not want to spend more on something like that.

WDW - I try to keep it under $3000 for a 10 night stay.

$2,500 makes me a little squeamish. Typically we can do a non-Disney vacation for $1,500 (My parents often take us places, we rent houses and share with groups of friends, etc to save money) This trip started off at $3,000 and is now up to $5,000! Eek!

I'm on the opposite end of things - absolutely shocked at some of the low numbers. It seems like we're at $1000 just to GET anywhere worth going these days! I know part of that is that we seldom if ever have enough time for road trips so anywhere further than a day's drive entails flying, but still... $2K seems so low for a family vacation! I consider myself pretty good at budgeting and bargain hunting but only short and/or close to home vacations have ever made it in that cheaply for our family.

But we don't have a mortgage any more so we can spend more on vacationing. Our travel spending is often our single largest budget line-item for the year, only occasionally falling second to healthcare.

A few years ago I would have said about $5000 but now that DD is getting older and college years seem to be getting closer and closer I try to stay in the $2500-3000 area. Southwest rapid rewards are great and have allowed us to fly for free the last two trips. (Southwest credit card and e-rewards)

If we do want to go somewhere more expensive it will have to be every other year with a few cheap weekend trips on the off years.

I have found that leaving DH at home is the best budget saver there is. He likes to add on things like days at Universal and Discovery Cove plus rental car which always end up bumping up my costs. DD and I can easily spend the whole week at Disney and never leave property. We don't need a rental car as we liked ME and taking the buses.

I would love to do an Alaskian cruise or Hawaii trip but flights from the East coast are too much for me plus I hate long plane trips. Hopefully one day we'll get there.

I think anything over 3k would make me squirm.

For non-Disney trips my mom and I usually take them together and split the bill. She has a timeshare and a few summers ago she got a really good price for a week in Puerto Vallarta and it was great. I think the most expensive thing we paid for were the flights!

For Disney I try to stay below $1500 for just my boyfriend and I. We were gifted AP's for Christmas this past year so that's definitely taken out a big chunk of the bill and given us the chance to go multiple times.

My mom, aunt, and boyfriend and I are going on a Disney trip next month (25 days!) and I've budgeted out approximately 2k for hotel, food, my mom & aunts tickets, and souvenirs. It just means I've guessed how much gas we'll spend on the 6 hour drive, my mom got a really good hotel price, and I made up mock menus with pricing of what I think we would order at our sit down reservations and a certain amount of QS and snacks and stuff each day.

And I want your mortgage. :) 12K would only be about 7 months for us. And we put 1/2 down on our house, so we're lower than most others in the area. Taxes here make the monthly payment almost double.

But I would not spend 12K on a trip. We seem to average about 4K and anything past 5K would make me nervous.

Our house has been paid off for several years now, so we like to splurge on vacations. Some years our trips are inexpensive and others are more pricey. Last summer we went to Beaches Turks & Caicos for a week. It was the most we ever spent on a vacation and it was NOT worth it. I was disappointed in the food and drinks. The resort was beautiful, but it was not worth the $ we spent. Just because something costs more doesn't mean its better.
