Going in October to BLT, renting points. Need to insure the cost of the resort since it is nonrefundable. Who have you used in the past? About how much did it cost?

John and/or Kevin have referred me to insuremytrip.com. I don't think they have any financial relations with that site, but it allows you to compare policies side by side to help you find the coverage you need at the price you want.

I always use insuremytrip.com. Highly recommend!

We have no affiliation with insuremytrip.com.

We just think it's a great site to compare policies and prices.

How far in advance do they require you to purchase it? We are traveling October 19-26 and I am a bit concerned about hurricanes but am not sure yet if I want to purchase it; I would prefer to wait a few months.

Thanks

My son and I work for a power company in SW MS so we do get the occasional tropical storm or hurricane and we booked for Disney in September. If we were to have to cancel due to work obligations, would trip insurance cover this?

I don't think many insurance plans would cover that as normally they will only cover a storm, hurricane or some other related issue at the destination, not your point of origin.

This my be a dumb question why do you get travel insurance?
Well, as an example, on the last day of my trip to Alaska, as I was loading up my rental car to leave for the airport, I slipped on a damp deck (it was still dark) and hit my head on the edge of one of the wooden steps & sliced my scalp. I was taken to the ER, where my scalp was stapled, and a CAT scan done to make sure I was OK. I had a phone number for the trip insurance concierge service (many policies include this) The trip insurance folks talked directly to the billing office at the ER, and I never even saw a bill. Then they called Alaska Airlines and helped me re-book the flight that took off while I was in the ER, and paid all of the exorbitant change fees to get me on that flight (which was the next morning). They booked & paid for a hotel room by the airport for the night. Yep, it was SO worth it to have trip insurance. And I was in the United States! If something were to happen out of the country, it becomes even more important (most health insurance does not cover you out of the country).

You can buy insurance usually up until the day before you leave. The only problem with this is 1) pre-existing conditions are not covered and 2) you must buy the insurance *before* that hurricane is a blip on the maps. Once a weather condition starts to happen, it's too late to cover it with trip insurance if you haven't purchased the policy yet.

Some policies do cover "Cancel for Work Reasons". Use www.insuremytrip.com to find a policy that covers that. Or call their toll-free number. They are VERY helpful over the phone.

My travel agent informed me we can cancel up to the day before check in and only lose $200 deposit. Sounds good to me.
Depends on the vacation. You can't do that with a cruise or Adventures by Disney.

Actually, the thread was discussing trip insurance for a WDW vacation (a "regular" one, not ABD, DCL, etc.), so dkdkdunaways' comments (about regular trips) are valid in this conversation. :)
I'm really not trying to be argumentative, but the OP was discussing trip insurance specifically for a non-refundable WDW vacation. :) If your trip is fully refundable and in the US, trip insurance is pretty much a waste of money for you. :confused3 You will only get re-imbursed for non-refundable expenses, and the medical coverage is not needed because your regular medical insurance should cover you.
