I'm starting to think about birthday ideas for my 4.5 yr old and 2.5 yr old...

The things they have never gotten sick of are: playdoh (playing with it right now! :)), magnadoodles, bristle blocks, legos, crayons/coloring books, bubbles, action figures and computer games.

That's all I can think of right now. How about your kids??

For my DD it's craft supplies. We go thru more popsicles sticks, pipe cleaners and googly eyes then you can imagine. Oriental Trading Company was having a big sale on craft supplies and I ordered a huge box of stuff. It should cover her birthday and Christmas stocking.

My dd6 loves to play board games with me. Your kids may still be too young. She started with Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders. She still plays those and also plays Connect Four, Hungry Hippos, Elephun(sp?), Trouble, Operation, and Monopoly Jr.

Brio and Thomas the Tank Engine.

edited to add any Playmobil. I didn't buy Playmobil when my kids were small like yours even though they were asking for it. I thought the pieces were too small and it was too expensive. When the same items showed up on the Christmas list many, many years in a row, I caved in. The pirate ship and the house get played with daily.

Bottle caps.

And plastic bags.

And used Q-tips dug out of the bathroom trash.

(No kids here, sorry. Just a cat who thinks everything's a potential plaything. :p)

If I think back to when I was a kid...I didn't tire of things which required some creativity or imagination or physical activity on my part. Simple things, really. Also books and games were always enjoyable. Guess that's pretty vague and not much help. :o Hopefully others will give you some concrete suggestions. :)

Her swingset - My nearly 7 year old daughter LOVES her swingset & sandbox. She wants to do nothing but play outside.

His cars and brio trains & bob the builder sets - He loves cars and has since he was old enough to play with them.

They both LOVE to color and do artwork. They could do that until their fingers fall off.

That is about it. I was just considering selling many of my daughter's toys. She has bins of them she doesn't play with. I know that once winter hits she will pull them all back out again though.

My son ADORES Sesame Street and it is one of the few things that keep his attention. However, he just turned 2 on the 9th and knows most of his alphabet and every number from 1 to 10 by sight. So, that can't be all bad even though it isn't technically a toy. ;)

Books, play-doh, paint w/ water, coloring books/crayons, sandbox, mega blocks, dress up clothes. :)

My son's rubbermaid container filled to the brim was certainly the most expensive "toy" he owned. But if I figured the cost per time he played with it, it was probably the least expensive. We started getting him Brio train items when he turned 1. He still played with it when he was 7 or 8. It's in our attic now, waiting for him to have children of his own.

Hotwheels. That is the only thing that he plays with EVERY day, every minute.

He even memorizes them, the kid isn't even 3 yet but knows all the cars. Heaven forbid if he can't find his Black Jeep with the trailor hitch. I guess I am just jealous of his memory.

LITTLE PEOPLE! My three year old will play with those things forever. He also loves Potato Head and the Big Legos.

My 4 1/2 year old just doesn't really play with toys. I've always thought that was a bit funny. He loves computer games and video games, and will sometimes play with Rescue Heroes.

Another vote for Thomas the Train. It's not cheap, but they're well constructed and my son plays with his set daily.

If you do this route, I suggest getting a train table (the Thomas the Train people sell them, but you can get less expensive -- but still well made -- ones through other companies. This way, he can keep the train track design up and ready for play, without it being on the floor and in the way.

When my son was 2 we bought him the Fisher Price castle. He's now 10, and although he'd never admit it to his friends he still plays with it. That was the best $30 we ever spent.

For my DD who is going to be 5 - is anything that she can use her imagination for.

My DD would be lost without any princess dresses. She loves dressing up! Even though she has her play shoes, she still insists on MY heels!! :hyper:

For her, things that stimulate her mind. The ONLY electronic/battery operated toy that she has ever played with for more than a month after receiving it -& that she STILL plays with quite often- is the LeapPad plus writing. She got it from Santa when she was 3. Since she got it I have bought a few more books for it, but she still loves it. It is GREAT for car trips, too! This is the one I recommened for any boy or girl!!!

Also, the big dollhouse she got for Christmas last year. She plays with the people & the car without the house too.

I have two boys 5 and 2.5. They play with their Thomas train table every day. It is set up in our formal living room (which we never use) so they can play there and I can see them from most of the main floor of the house.

They also love Rescue Heros. We have the rescue hero aquatic command center and numerous action figures and they also get played with most days.

Other items are playdough, markers/crayons. mr. potato head and any type of puzzle.

The one thing that Santa has ever brought that still gets continuous use is the trampoline.

Game Boys still are played with, as are DS's Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

I'm thinking of doing a Barbie purge over the weekend...just how many naked dolls with bad hair does one family need?

Right now, DS-3 loves his puzzles! He has 4 that he plays with all the time. They are the 25 piece and I think he just memorizes where everything goes, because after about 4 or 5 times, he does the puzzle in about 5 minutes.

He also loves his Buzz/Woody/Zurg talking doll things.

And his Jay Jay the Jet Plane set...and his Hot Wheeles cars. He loves to lay them end to end across my living room. Ugh! LOL! But, I love it! :teeth:

The surefire toy in our house has always been Legos - both of my boys will play with their Legos for hours. I'm not so wild about Legos, since I always seem to be stepping on them and then subsequently bending over to pick up, but I do like that they can use their imagination while playing with them.

Ds, now 8, still plays with his Toy Story toys.

My almost 6 yo ds loves his trucks.

They also play with their legos and Rescue Heros. Thomas was HUGE around here!

Legos- I find those tiny little things all over the house. DD even fills up her little princess purse with as many as she can stuff in.

Art supplies- markers, tape, paper, paints, play-doh
