What to wear premium ecoomy

Most of the times we've been upgraded (either economy to Business or Business to First Class) we've been wearing jeans - not scruffy at all, just relaxed and casual. We're not "frequent fliers" either. We just tend to be the right people, in the right place, at the right time. :confused3

Still, if someone is saying that if we dressed up we would be upgraded EVEN more often, that would be AMAZING :thumbsup2

Welcome alice.
Never had an upgrade after doing about 30 transatlantic flights. Only upgrade I have ever had is On Disney Cruise upgraded from inside cabin to outside with balcony, wasted on us really as we only used it once.:guilty:

I wear what I normally wear to fly comfy jeans and top

Thanks wayneg. Do you always travel with children?

I must admit that we haven't been upgraded since our little girl, Lucy, was born about 18 months ago... I think that makes quite a difference. Still, we often pay to travel business class now, so I guess the airlines didn't waste all those upgrades.

Whatever class we fly, we dress comfortable and casual, but not scruffy.

Don't worry what you wear mate, I wore shorts!!

Premium Economy with Virgin was crap anyway, its the same as Economy but with wider seats and your food on real plates and drinks in glasses rather than plastic!!

It was no way at all woth the £800.00 extra we paid for this service!

BTW these flight I'm refering to were to/from Manchester who have the older planes in Virgin's fleet with old style prem economy and old style everything to be honest. Even the flight crew admitted to us, Manchester currently get the raw deal when it comes to the aircraft used, but its still the same price as what the London passengers pay and they have newer aircraft and the new IFE system!

So wear anything you please, there was only a few snobs in suits on our flight with laptops, the rest were holiday makers in Disney gear like us!!

I think it's well worth the extra. If you are upstairs especially, big seats, a lot more legroom, no long wait for food, dedicated staff just for this cabin, two toilets for appx 28 people - so no waiting, it's quieter and the fact you get off the plane first. If you know your way around you can get through immigration and pick up your car real quick before the hoards appear.

Why are you a snob, if you are in a suit? Maybe they were not going on holiday?

DH often travels in a linen suit and I am sure that does not mark him out as a snob, as I am sure that all people who travel in shorts and t shirts are not chavs!

So wrong on so many accounts.
By your own admission its not the same as economy, the seats are wider with longer leg rooom, the food is different menu to economy and yes is served with proper china, PE also now has its own dedicated ameinity kit. You get pre take off drinks and hot towels.
The aircraft are the same aircraft as used on the London Gatwick-Orlando and the new Galsgow -Orlando route They take turns doing either LGW, MAN or GLA flights.
The aircraft are the Alitalia cancelled order of 747-400's, hardly "old aircraft" plus they are also topped up with one of the London heathrow 747's. They are not the Airbus A300 planes, true. (Thank GOD!)

the refit of the 747's will happen once the A300's are finished, the same way as the UCS were fitted first to the A300's as they carry out tyhe premium routes for Virgin.
The demand for PE and UCS has been so great that the 747's will have more of both in them.

Are you actually aware that Orlando since New orleans was virtually washed away, the conferance capital of the south? Because someone has a laptop and a suit on does not make him a snob no more than coming from Manchester makes a person a Chav.
I take may laptop and do sometimes wear a suit if I have meetings in the USA or am going to V & A's

So wrong on so many accounts Obi IN YOUR OPINION!!!!

I personally dont think that saving up for over a year to pay £800 extra for a bigger seat and a china plate is worth it !!!!

You obviously think that it is! And can afford to pay for this so called better service.

It is the view of Virgins own cabin crew that Manchester get the older planes - just ask them next time you fly with them!

I paid £100 extra to fly in the Premium service with First Choice and this was far far superior to Virgin. Leather seats, china service, disney menus and seat bag tvs with on demand.

When you compare the two, Virgin lose every time apart from the fact they fly to MCO.

Hi NeilDrum,

I'd agree that £800.00 does seem a lot for this upgraded service, how many were there in your party?

Speaking as a "jeans and T-shirt kinda guy", I think your comments on people in suits are a bit off and perhaps shows you up as a snob(inverted).

As for the original question? It's a long journey, wear whatever you're comfortable in.

You have misread my last posting in response to you. "A bigger seat and china plate" is not the situation of the difference between Economy and Premium Economy. Please read again, the differences.
I have also explained in that posting that the planes on the Manchester route are the same planes as used on the London Gatwick and Glasgow routes, and are based upon a fleet of 747-400's which were a cancelled Boeing Alitalia order and are not that old.
G-VGAL "Jersey Girl" which is one of the aircraft that carries out the London gatwick and Manchester routes was delivered 26th April 2001, hardly and old plane is it? The oldest plane on the London Gatwick/Manchester/Glasgow routes was delivered on 17th June 1997, hardly a creaking old wreck eh?
In point of fact, the aircraft running some of the London Heathrow routes are older, G-VHOT (Tubular Belle) 12th Oct 1994
G-VFAB (Lady penelope) 28th April 1994
for example. Hardly fits in with your "Manchester get the oldest planes" comment does it?
Please read my response to you again.

Manchester used to get different planes to Gatwick but since the UC suite refit all the Manchester and Gatwick planes are the same and used on a rotational basis, perhaps you are thinking of a few years ago when Manchester used to use different planes with the different upper deck service hence the different PE seats comment?? No the London Gatwick flights do not get better IFE it is only the majoprity of the Heathrow routes that do, unless due to maintainence a Heathrow planes has to be used on a Gatwick route, but then it could equally be used on a Manchester route now.

As for the service you get dedictaed checkin, early boarding, drinks before take off, larger seats with more leg room than economy, you get let off the plane before economy and often UC, bags are tagged differently and come off the plane quicker. So in all we think this service is worth the extra money that we pay.

Claire ;)

Everyone has their opinions on what is good service and value for money. Can we please keep to the original topic and not turn this into an argument on the pros and cons of Economy and PE.

Cheers :)

This thread seems to have side-tracked from the original question being asked! I always like to travel in something comfortable with a few layers as some flights
can be either too hot or cold. I also pack a pair of shorts and t-shirt in my hand luggage to change into when we arrive at the airport (change in toilet!)

I agree wear what you're comfortable in, its always a good idea to have a fleece/cardi/jumper with you in case the air conditioning goes full whack and you freeze also good to wear just a light cotton t shirt in case you get stuck with the sun beating in on you and you cook.
even the Queen wears a tracksuit on flights so don't be embarassed about anything you wear

Might be a stupid question but what do other people where when they fly this class?:rotfl2:

Just wear whatever you feel comfortable in, some people feel more comfy traveling in casual clothes and some don't ;) Whenever you travel, you see many people from all walks of life dressed in all sorts weird and wonderfull garbs :) It makes for a more colourfull experience;) Just my opinion, we usually take spare shorts/t's and stuff in our carry-on and change in the loo. (it's a tight squeeze, i know :crowded: )

Hope this helps you ;)

clean pants - as my mum always taught!!

and when you ask for your seat reservation make sure to request the upper floor if you're on a 747, loads of space, much more than the downstairs PE and dedicated cabin staff. Downstairs you feel a bit lost as its only a tiny PE (2 rows) stuck between upper and coach.

so go upstairs, get nice space, big aisle and you feel like you're travelling business not PE!
