Hi everyone! I am new to Disboards....so excited for our Alaskan cruise next month. Just wondering what kind of clothing would you suggest for the ports? We are stopping in Juneau, Tracey Arms , Skagway and Ketchikan. We are just planning to walk around and check out the local sites. How cold will it be? Do we need hats and gloves?

We wore shorts and t-shirts. It was in the 60s when we went in 2012. Sometime I wore a fleece vest when it got down in the 50s at night.

Bring a light rain jacket with a hood, it is wet this time of year. I wore a good pair of walking shoes that were waterproof like merrells vs tennis shoes which get wet much easier? It will get cool in the evening and the Tracy arm day may be cooler. If you are wanting to sit on deck and watch the scenery warmer clothes. Think evenings in late October early November time frame if you are from the northern part of the country. Have fun!

Alaska weather is unpredictable, your best bet is to bring layers and always be prepared for rain. We got lucky last August and it was sunny the whole cruise but we heard the week before it was 7 days of rain.

The only time we truly felt cold was at Tracy Arm. We were pretty lucky the week we went, it apparently poured the week before us and was expected to rain the week after us. We only got a little light rain in Skagway. Definitely bring a jacket and gloves just to be on the safe side. Have a wonderful cruise!

We cruised the 2nd week of August last year and had rain on Tracy Arm, Skagway and Juneau days. Definitely bring layers. We wore shorts and t-shirts in Vancouver (really warm) and tshirts and jeans most days on the ship. In Skagway, it was wet in town but warm and sunny when we went at Carcross so being able to take off layers was perfect.

For Tracy Arm, it was wet and cold so we had long sleeve tshirt, fleece jacket and then a rain shell over the top. Plus gloves and hats (I wore fingerless gloves that had a mitten portion that could be placed over the fingers or folded back - this was perfect for taking pictures but still keeping my fingers warm in between).

In Juneau, it started pouring rain on our walk out to Nugget Falls (Mendenhall Glacier) so having waterproof boots was a life-saver. Parts of the trail were completely under water, as was the last portion of trail to the falls (we skipped that part because we couldn't see how deep it was). But it was nice being able to complete the walk and stay dry :)

Instead of a big waterproof jacket, having a fleece for warmth and then a pack-able rain shell to stay dry worked out great for us (and took less room in the luggage).

Layers, layers, layers. On our end of Aug 2014 cruise We brought many light weight clothing that we layered as needed. The only really cold day was Tracey Arms. On that one day we had as many layers as we could fit on at a time with our rain jackets on the outside. The rest of the cruise was incredibly pleasant. The only other day we were glad we had multiple layers to peel off was in Ketchikan on our salmon fishing cruise. The wind out on the open lake got a bit rough by late afternoon.
