What to use to get rid of wasps?

I really really hate wasps, and every year, we have tons of them! Today, I saw the first 2, ready to bother us. They hang around our deck (cedar), and then inside our aluminum fence...in almost every post. Does anyone recommend something we could spray to actually keep them away? Thanks!

edit to add...has anyone ever had their whole house power sprayed? I called a pest place, and they take care of wasps but they spray the whole house, and I don't know how safe that would be for our kids and dog. Is it safe for them to be in the house still then?

Liquid soap and water.....That's it....kills them instantly. We had a ton of bees in our shutters last year...I got a cup of water with regular liquid siap we use to wash dishes and poared it down the shutters......They all died and I couldn't believe how many were in there until they all fell out.

They sell a spray at Home Depot that shoots the poison from a distance, no need to get up close and personal. It works really well.

We've had our whole house, deck and play structure sprayed every year for the past 4 years and we have never had any problems. They told us to keep the kids and dog in until it dried. Before we let the kids or dog out we go around and look for any standing water, in buckets and things, and make sure we get rid of it. If is perfectly safe to stay in the house, just make sure all of the windows and doors are closed, which they should be if they are spraying the house.

The spray works great, before we started having everything sprayed we couldn't enjoy our yard they were so bad. The company we use, guarantees no active nests from May - October. If you find an active nest they come back out and respray for free.

a hose
a long stick
and some running shoes.
heheheh

oh...that's DH's method...

I've never really liked Raid and other bug sprays, so I use what my Grandma once showed me and it works like a charm every time. Good old fashioned hair spray. I keep a can in the garage for easy access in the summer.

It makes their wings sticky and they drop like a rock to the ground. The only thing is it doesn't actually kill them, you have to do that yourself once they are on the ground.

Good ethnic food makes them uncomfortable everytime

:teeth: I don't think those were the kind of wasp's they were refering to !!!

What works best for me is this. As soon as I see one I run around and scream like a girl (it helps that I am a girl) then run into the house and tell DH, then I hide in the house until he deals with it. :upsidedow

Wasps are REALLY bad here already. DS is TERRIFIED of them--even though he's never been stung. I like the soap and water thing. If that works, it sounds like the cheapest way to go!!

I have the opposite problem. I have a DH that runs around and screams like a girl when he sees a wasp. :lmao:

I bought a wasp spray that shoots like 20 feet- they like to hang out in the vent that leads to our attic. SO, I shoot from 20 feet away, then run like it's my job.

I'll have to try to soapy water thing. I rent a cottage apartment and my landlords for the fifth summer in a row refuse to acknowledge it's an issue. They won't hire anyone, they just spray the place with store bought stuff. I have yet to have a summer at my apartment where I can enjoy our deck. And yes, like OP, noticed the first signs of those little devils this week. :scared:

That was my brothers' method. :teeth: They ran into each other while trying to kill the wasps with a hose and a broom. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: It was hilarious!!!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

You sound just like me! You should SEE the beauty of a bruise that I gave myself last week while trying to escape not only a wasp, but 2 bumblebees as well. I literally closed the wrought iron door on my arm!

We're coming into wasp season now. Yuck.

There's a spray that freezes the nest & will kill any inside of it. Problem is, they recommend you using it at dawn or dusk, when they're least active---makes sense, but we always forget to use it at those times! It does work great though.
