Here in CT, many of us are still without power. Fortunately, we never lost it but the school district at which I work has been closed all week.

Anywho...I'm having my family over tomorrow night for dinner as they are still without power and are craving a home cooked meal. There will be 10 of us altogether and I am planning on making stuffed cabbage. Besides bread, what else can I serve with it? I suppose I can always make a salad, but with the cabbage, it just seemed wierd. Any suggestions?

Hmmm, stuffed cabbage. Love It! I usually make mine with rice, not bread. I put lots of carrots and celery in the sausage mix, along with the cabbage blanket should be plenty of veges to go with dinner. Ive also sauteed the leftover cabbage with onions and served it on the side.

Cabbage is my favorite vegetable. So versatile.

A nice salad would be a wonderful accompaniment.

parsleyed potatoes or mashed w/peas. Definitely NOT a salad as raw veggies are gassy as are the cabbage rolls. How about cooking down some local apples and making applesauce?
Tropical fruit salad. Pineapple upsidedown cake.

Gassy is a reason to stop? Candles BAYBEE! LOL

My mom was just talking about having stuffed cabbage for dinner :) She made new potatoes with butter/parsley on them to go with. YUM!

I think of stuffed cabbage as a vegetable and a meat (even though it contains a starch) so I would add a starch like potatoes.

Not sure if stuffed cabbage is the same as cabbage rolls, but when i make cabbage rolls we have new baby potatoes with them.

Can you share your stuffed cabbage recipie??

I was wondering the same thing! I make my cabbage rolls with a ground beef/rice mixture. So yummy!

Maybe us Canadians call them 'cabbage rolls' and the Americans call it 'stuffed cabbage'. From reading the previous posts, they sure sound the same!

I would do roasted fingerling potato's. I usually toss with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast in the oven. I think mashed would be a good choice too. I would also serve warm rolls.

I have never made stuffed cabbage rolls before so if anyone would share a recipe, I would love to try them!

i just wanted to add: Holy Cow, still no power!! That is crazy. We lost it for 2 days and I thought that was bad. What are people doing who don't have family close by, or who can't afford a hotel??

Could be!

OP, what a perfect meal for a bunch of people who have been without power! When my mom made it, she just served it alone--nothing extra. I guess she figured it was a veggie, meat & starch all in one. But I have seen it in restaurants served with mashed potatoes.

And now I want some too. One of my favorite meals of all time.

Stuffed Cabbage , Cabbage Rolls, Pigs in a Blanket.

All the same

Ground Pork
diced carrots
diced celery
diced onion
rice
Riesling
S&P
Cabbage Leaves

Cook rice as directed

I saute the pork until browned. Remove and drain most of the fat. saute the diced veges for 5 minutes, add the pork and about 1 cup Riesling, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

Remove filling and set aside to cool.

I steam my cabbage head so the leaves are easily peeled and rolled.

When ingredients are cooled enough to handle, roll stuffing in cabbage (tooth picks to hold) and set the rolls in a 9x13 pyrex. Use pam for non stick.

Bring liquid in saute back to boil. Add a slurry and if you need more liquid, chicken broth/Riesling (I really like the flavor the sweet wine gives to the pork). Make a gravy and pour over the cabbage. Put in oven to finish, 350 for 15 minutes.

I serve mine on rice. You can also make this meatless just be increasing rice and veges before rolling.

Now why didn't I think of potatoes?? :) Thanks--that is exactly what I will serve.

Annamae: yes, can you believe it? Tomorrow will be one week without power. Most towns have temporary shelters set up for those who really are desperate. Generators are flying out of the stores. Our school has power but because there's still so many live wires on the road, they don't feel it's safe to have the kids waiting at bus stops, etc. No guarantee for Monday either.

To those that asked, stuffed cabbage is the same as cabbage rolls. I use rice, a mixture of ground beef & pork (and sometimes even ground turkey) and seasonings to stuff them. I cook mine on the stovetop with sauerkraut, tomato sauce and whole tomatoes (canned) and sprinkle with black pepper. Sooo yummy!

How about steak? Then you can throw away the stuffed cabbage and eat dinner. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Just joking. I hate cabbage so it's not really something I'd consider pairing with anything.

I love stuffed cabbage and in our house we just serve a loaf rye bread on the side. I stuff mine with ground chuck, cooked rice and chopped onion. They are then cooked on top of the stove with tomato soup. This is how my dad's mom fixed them and she passed recipe onto my mom. Now if I can just master her pierogies I will be a happy camper.

I make boiled potatoes with mine. I also cook the cabbage rolls on the stovetop in a tomato based liquid. I drizzle a little of the liquid that the rolls were cooked in over the potatoes. So yummy! :)

i have been searching for something to do with 1/2 a head of cabbage today. Stuffed cabbage...i love it and I agree with the potato side...mashed, boiled or whatever, but i have served it with cornbread in the past.
anyway i don't think that I can salvage good large leaves off the head that i have cut into (but i will inspect it to see) , so either a stir fry or coleslaw is what i will do...maybe spring rolls? I also have an eggplant to deal with before it goes bad along with 2 bananas and a bag of apples plus 4.
I have my work cut out for me.

My father is from PA and he grew up calling it pigs in a blanket. We usually have them with the left over cabbage that has been fried in butter and pierogies. :)
