What to put on my stairway

I have finally finished taking down the wallpaper from my stairs and hallway. Now I am not sure what to do with it. I thought I would just paint and then my mother reminded me of all the fingerprints. I dont want to put up wallpaper because I still need to put gates up. If I use a semigloss want the prints wash off? I was also thinking of maybe doing soem sort of texture paint, or maybe half panelling. Any suggestions? thanks

How about a satin paint and asking the kids to put their hands on the stairrail instead of the wall? This may cut down on some of the fingerprints.
