Ok now I gotta get my planning cap back on…Seems we will be making a stop in Freeport for our Sept 22nd cruise. An unexpected surprise one must say! I guess folks can go either way with this…some may be upset that they are loosing their day and sea and others will be glad to get to experience another stop. I think my family will choose to fall under the latter of the two choices and adjust and be happy.
I think we could use some help with the DCL surprise…I know little/nothing about Freeport other then what I have found on the DCL site and through a quick search on DIS. Can someone (the more the better) give use the scoop on Freeport…the good, the bad, the ugly, for families with little kids and adults alike. Excursions, Beaches, Shopping, Relaxing, And so on. Also any links to sites with Freeport info would be much appreciated.

Lets make the best of this gang!

I just want to say that we had a wonderful time at Freeport. We had our Dolphin Encounter here. It was wonderful. Lots cheaper than in Nassau, also I hear more relaxed.

Even if you are not doing an excursion take a bus or cab over to Port Lucaya (about 15 mins ride) well worth the trip. This area is a pretty as a post card. One or two large hotels with beautiful beach front areas.

The area around the cove has several small shops. It looks like the ads on TV with all of the homes around the cove painted different bright colors.

Definitely get off and take the time to look around.

We did the Lucayan beach day exursion and we all enjoyed it (other than people using the pools floats when they got there then trying to keep them for themselves the whole day!)
The pool was really nice, VERY BIG and the beach area was also very nice.

Our cruise itinerary has changed too and now we are looking for info on Freeport...

Thanks Scottie for creating this thread - as you must know of our situation on the Freeport stop - we will adjust and be happy and make to most of it!! Who knows, maybe we will love Freeport. We are looking for information to make our cruise vacation that much more enjoyable.

Thanks for the info.

I did the glass bottom boat excursion last December and it was great! And from talking with others, it sounds like this boat (larger viewing windows, more to see) was a lot better than the ones offered in Nassau. I really enjoyed it and I'd do it again. There was some shopping near there but I didn't do much. Got some wonderful ice cream at one of the stores and sat and enjoyed the Christmas decorations and people-watched before boarding the bus back to the ship.

We did the semi-submarine excursion while there and I would NOT recommend it. You take a boat out, and then they herd you underneath the deck where you sit on benches and watch the boat crew swim with the fish and feed them so they get close to the boat windows.

It was very crowded, and not good for motion sickness people! I usually do NOT get motion sickness, and I definitely got woozy on this one. AND there was A/C runoff dripping on everyone while we were under the boat.

i'm feeling woozy just telling this story. hehe....

Seriously, spend the day at the beach... you will enjoy it much more!

Thanks for the info so far...keep it comming...the more the better!!
Is there public beach(s) at Freeport or would we be required to do an excursion to enjoy the sand and ocean?

We were on The Wonder and after going into Nassau, my 7 year old decided to skip the rest of the Bahamas and stay on board in her club. We got off and grabbed a cab to do a bit of shopping and the other girls in our group got their hair braided outside of the shops. We were off the ship about 4 hours, and my little girl barely missed us. Just as an aside about a great experience, my other daughter left one of the walkie talkies in the cab, we told another cab driver about it and he found it, returned it to the ship where we boarded and they called us on it letting us know it was found- now THAT"S a Disney experience!
Otherwise, I would advise skipping Freeport and enjoying the less crowded ship! Don't over book yourself-you paid for your beautiful ship, enjoy it!:bounce:

Hi Scottie,
When we went to Freeport it was on one of the 1st trips Disney made to that port. At that time we were upset that we didn't have a day at sea. There wasn't a lot to do but the island was beautiful. Just thought I'd let you know my family and I will be sailing 9/22 with you on the Wonder. We'll be in rooms 2094 & 2096. Hope to see you onboard.

Cheryl

What's the best way to get to Port Lucaya (have a DD8 and DS6). Bus and taxi have been mentioned. What's the cost, etc.
