I was asked to be the godfather for my best friends daughter. What would be a suitable gift to give for the baptism?

I've never done this before so I have no clue. It is a traditional Catholic baptism. I know that she already has a dress for the ceremony.

Thanks

My youngest was baptized in Feb and her godmother did something really cool. She started a Fontanini nativity set for her with the crèche and the holy family. She will add to it for special occasions over the years so when she is an adult she will have a full nativity set.

I love that idea!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually goive money a savings bond or a crucifix. But I don't give a baby-ish crucifix. I give one that, if the kid wanted to, they could display in their home as an adult.

Last kid that got baptized got a pewter Celtic cross. He was Irish and it was lovely and was the type of thing that owuld be appropriate lifelong.

Among my family & friends, it is traditional for the Godfather to buy a crucifix and what ever gift they decide for the baby. Usually it's a check or savings bond. The Godmother buys the christening outfit and gives a gift.

My niece is being baptized this weekend and we are the godparents. We are giving her a pearl bracelet with a tiny cross on it. It can be adjusted so that she can wear it as a double strand when she is a child, then a single strand as an adult. I'm also giving her the a Veggie Tales toddler songs CD. My kids loved it even as a baby and my 3 year old still requests it frequently. I like it because it is a gift the baby herself can enjoy immediately. There are songs like pop goes the weasel as well as religious songs like he's got the whole world in his hands and this is the day the Lord has made.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I think a crucifix and a savings bond sound great. That Veggie Tales CD sounds good too.

What a lovely idea!

My boys godfathers bought their baptismal outfit (tradition according to them...I was not aware of it) and then gave them a children's bible and some kid friendly religious books on the day of.

My parents did a crucifix and in my family it is a tradition for grandparents to give them at the time but it varies so you might want to feel around to make sure there aren't duplicates.

I like these ideas too. Very thoughtful of you to think about it.

Our priest always tells the Godfather that the Godfather is responsible for lunch after the Baptism and $500 on every birthday and holiday! (Just a joke)

I am Godmother to my niece. I gave her a sterling silver charm bracelet with a baptism charm. She is now three, and I have added a "1" for her first birthday, and a Mickey Mouse representing her first trip. I plan to add charms for all of the big occasions: 1st communion, confirmation, high school graduation, and anything else that seems appropriate.

My godchild's baptism was yesterday. I got him a white blanket embroidered with his name and the baptism date, and a rosary. The godfather got him a cross necklace. I went looking around a Christian bookstore and there was a whole display of baptism gifts to give you some more ideas.
