What to do with old VHS tapes?

I have a ton of old VHS tapes that I want to get rid of but I don't know what to do with them, it feels wrong to just throw them out. I put them out at a yardsale and they didn't sell (they were each priced between $.50 and $2.00). I did a search on ebay and there are tons of listings and very few bids for VHS tapes so I don't want to list them. Does anyone know what I could do with them (anyone here want them ) or should I just toss them? Some of them are brand new still in the plastic.

depends what they are. If there are childrens tapes, maybe donate them to church, school or preschool? You can always donate them and use it on your taxes. Much easier than a garage sale! A local business might want them. I worked in a beauty shop when I was 17-19 and we'd put tapes in for the kids to watch while getting a haircut or to watch while their families got haircuts... good luck, I'm sure you'll get rid of them w/o throwing them away

What are they tapes of? Would there be any movies that a nursing home or senior center might want?
Have you checked to make sure they're still viewable? Sometimes if they sit for a long time they get distorted and are impossible to watch.

You know I didn't think of them becoming distorted. I have no way of checking since I no longer own a VCR. They are all kinds of movies. Some are exercise, some are childrens, some are movies ( Independece day, Jurassic park, Jerry Maguire etc)

When DS had to make a car for a school project we had enough of those AOL free trial CDs sitting around to use them for wheels.
His teacher loved it and a note came home the next week asking everyone to send any unwanted ones in for classroom projects.

So there you go - get rid of the VHS tapes and the AOL CD's all at once with Disney Addict's roller skate project.

We had mostly kid movies. We kept a few since our van still has a VCR in it, gave some of the cartoon shorts to our dentist (who has a movie corner in his waiting room that he has not upgraded to DVD yet), and donated the rest.

If nothing else, donate them to a goodwill type organization, at least you'll get a bit of a tax write-off.
Of course they may end up throwing them out, but you'll never know that so you won't feel like you're being wasteful.

Check with your local hospital. They make take the children's VHS tapes. I know our hospital will take them for the common area in the children's area. They also put them in the children's waiting area in the ER.

I am sure with a little legwork you can find places to donate them. Try your local schools, daycares, senior centers, churches, youth center, or the local library.

If you put them in a sale, sell them all in one box (or in lots of boxes according to category: childrens, exercise, adult, etc) or simply price them for .25 each. I often donate stuff like this to a church or charity rummage sale. That way they sell them and get the money, and they usually donate the leftovers to a local thrift store. You can try just donating them to your local thrift store too. I know we have several that the money they earn goes towards charity.

I like the idea of sending them to the troops. I don't think all of them would be well received though. lol I just can't see a bunch of men (woman too, but there are way more men) sitting around watching Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, etc...

If you want to try listing them on eBay, I'd list them in groups rather than 1 at a time. You won't get much, but I think someone would be willing to pay the shipping on 10 rather than 1. Just list them according to genre. That way you have a better chance of someone being interested in all the movies or most of them in that particular group instead of only 1 or 2.

If you decide to list them this way, explain that you no longer have a VCR to test them, but none had problems the last time you watched them. Then state you are selling them "AS IS" and for bidders to keep that in mind when deciding if they want to bid and/or how much they want to bid.

I think you should send me the address to send my movies, too. I have literally hundreds upon hundreds of VHS tapes that we no longer watch. I promise not to send them, The Three Caballeros! My son LOVED that stupid movie when he was little.

I've sold some on Amazon, but you don't get lots of money, and sometimes they take forever to get to people (because you use Media Mail). So I'd rather send them to people who would watch them.

Don't give up on Ebay. It depends on the titles, but there are still some International people who will bid on VHS tapes, and they will pay the extra shipping to get their hands on VHS tapes.

If you want to donate them, try convalescent centers, hospitals, Salvation Army, etc.
